Dawn of the Dark Age

Main Points:
Ace Attorney/YuGiOh crossover universe. Or something. (Duel Destinies!)
Summary: Phoenix calls Larry.
Word Count: 625
Rating: Gen
Notes: Spoilers for Apollo Justice and Dual Destinies, sort of? I decided to actually have the usual Yugioh cast in here, so. Uh, yeah, no idea what KarmaCorp does. *shrug* Yugioh's not always big on consistency, I don't have to be either. Maybe? I dunno, I'm just rambling now, ignore me and read fic.
“What’s up, Nick? It’s been ages since you’ve called!” Even over the phone, Phoenix can imagine the tears streaming down Larry’s face. He manages to keep the chuckle back, though, since his old friend would probably take it the wrong way.
“Uh, well, Inearlyhadmytitletakenaway,” he gets out quickly, aware that Larry will be just as angry as Edgeworth, only Edgeworth comes with volume control and Larry doesn’t. Even when he holds the phone away from his ear, he’s half deafened.
Who needs speakerphone when they could just dial Larry?
It’s when the din starts dying down into more hurt-sort-of-tones that Phoenix decides it’s safe to reemerge. “Pegasus and Yugi put in a good word for me, in the ‘I played him and would’ve noticed cheating’ way. And Edgeworth found out when they called on him as a character witness, and they ended up not being able to prove it, but…the damage to my reputation is still…”
He tries to not let the emotion into his voice, the absolute defeat he’d felt up there, worse than Dahlia or Von Karma or anyone he’d dueled. He hadn’t needed Maya to see the twisted tangle of lies and deception involved in setting up a guy like him, let alone for…what? For power? For a shot at the title themselves? For revenge? Like everyone, he’d heard the rumors about the Dark Age of the Duel, the end-justifies-the-means approach. The end of the era of self-taught duelists was coming, and while a school sounded amazing, the new focus on results (as rumored), was disturbing. But he hadn’t believed.
Not until now. He didn’t even really need the Magatama, but he had it, and for the first time he’d seen black psyche-locks, and even more than that, the feeling of pure evil that had nearly made him drop precious family heirloom and precious deck of cards. Someone was acting as puppetmaster, playing a dangerous game. And if it was a game they wanted, it was a game they’d get. He might not be King of Games, but he’d earned that title Turnabout King, and if there was ever a duel that seemed hopeless, it was this one. He could pull it off, rise like the phoenix he was named after, but it might be a long and a hard one.
“Nick, I’m on my way.” It’s always a bit of a shock when Larry turns serious, even if Phoenix knows he perfectly capable of it.
He shakes his head, even knowing Larry can’t see. “That’s not necc—”
“Seriously, you’re in trouble. I can’t just sit on the sidelines while a friend’s in trouble. Why didn’t you call me sooner, dude? Didn’t you trust me?” Okay, which of us went into acting? Because seriously, you’ve always been more melodramatic than me.
“Does ‘I’m going up into the mountains to spend a lovely month in a cabin with my lovely Almeta’ ring a bell, by any chance?” Wright really didn’t want to interrupt something like that.
“Well, actually, she left me.” For a moment, Larry sounds like he’s going to start whining about his state in life, then abruptly sobers. “But you’re in luck, because that frees me up to help out my best bud! America, here I come!”
Phoenix sighs. Edgeworth had said practically the same thing. He’d want to avoid them falling into the same trap, getting involved in something that seemed even darker than that thing with Dahlia, but…
And then he chuckles. But that’s what best friends were, right? Getting involved in things just to help out a friend, even when it’s probably the stupidest move. Even when you’re putting yourself in terrible danger. He could hardly say ‘no’ and be a hypocrite. “See you soon, then, Larry.”
