It’s easy to put on a brave face for his kid. Josuke’s been doing it for years now. When not in front of her, though…
Josuke bites his lip, nearly jumping out of his skin when he feels a supportive hand on his shoulder. It’s...Jotaro-san. Like he’s sympathetic. Like he gets being a parent, which makes absolutely no sense because he never has been, as far as Josuke knows. Then again, for a guy so hard to read, Jotaro-san makes a habit of actually showing some sort of empathy, even if he’s hardly straightforward about it.
It’s a change since he was a kid, but he’s realized since then Crazy Diamond has another limitation that had never occurred to him. Sure, he’d known about the fact that he couldn’t heal himself for years, and then there was the whole situation that still burns, even years later, where he can’t bring back the dead. But there’s another one he hadn’t considered until later.
Crazy D can only heal physical stuff. Trauma, anxiety, depression? The best he’s able to offer is some temporary relief, and even he’s not sure about that part. It could just be a placebo; there’s a lot of that. But he’d tried to help Okuyasu, after everything, and it hadn’t really done much, not for long, no matter how his bro thanked him for it every time, and it sucks that he isn’t able to do anything about it now, sucks that it’s probably going to be anything but great for his grandkid for a while, sucks that they just have to leave now of all times. But it can’t be helped; sure, it’d be for the best if they could retreat and lick their wounds, but that would give these Wolfram & Hart jerks time to do the same, and they’ve already done enough damage.
At least his advice is making Josie feel a little better about herself, which is something.
And, hey, they make it in one piece. Giorno shakes his head, smiling, when Josuke pumps his fist, but come on. Every time they step on a plane and then step off the plane and nothing’s gone wrong in between is a victory to be celebrated.
The Speedwagon Foundation has almost a fleet of cars waiting, but Jotaro-san decides that they should drive themselves, which is fair enough. People with Stands are more likely to live long enough for Josuke to get there in time to heal them. (Maybe their ability could be boosted using the Arrow and Crazy D, but he’s seriously not one of those chuckling scientists rubbing their hands in a lair who sees actual human beings as lab rats. Even if it could help them in the long run, he’s not putting their lives at risk like that.)
Okuyasu hadn’t noticed that he was worried. Koichi was, but he hadn’t gotten to talk to Josuke about it because Yukako-chan and Horse-san had started arguing, again, and he’d had to play mediator. Which was just great, because Josuke hadn’t wanted to talk about it anyway.
It’s just...seriously, demons? Ghosts? Vampires? The only reason he’s not completely losing his crap at the moment is because he’d had proof he could actually just punch them in the face, given that he’d been fighting them with Okuyasu thinking they were some weird sort of swarm Stand before he’d actually learned otherwise. That, and he’s got a lot of backup for this one, and Jotaro-san has already outsmarted a ghost and won, so he could absolutely do it again.
Then again, he really doesn’t want to sit here stuck in his head for the entire car ride, and he’s already starting to get antsy, so he turns to Rosenberg-chan. “What are we expecting?”
Surprisingly, she snickers, and then remarks, “Ohhh yeah, I can definitely see the family resemblance now.” That’s...probably an insult, but it might be a compliment? She gets interrupted before he can get himself together and actually figure out a response, though.
“I can’t blame you, though. Giles always gets more formal and uses way too many words when he gets nervous.” Summers-san didn’t seem like she was listening, just was concentrating on driving, which is probably for the best given that a couple of people seemed...concerned...about the prospect of her driving, and they’re talking quietly, but apparently her hearing is pretty good. (And honestly, she doesn’t actually seem that bad, but if they’d seen her drive as a teenager, that could explain it. Josuke assumes that very few people that age can drive properly, even if they are from America.) She sounds really cheerful about this, too.
Maturely, Rosenberg-chan pokes out her tongue before continuing. “It’s maybe not a big stretch to think he might’ve been worried about Xander, too, Buffy!” And—yeah, he’d been just generally really keyed up and possibly starting to get why Jotaro-san had wandered away from the hotel in the first place.
The acknowledging “yeah” might be taken as dismissive if not for the tone, which says that she’s sick and tired of this, and honestly Josuke’s pretty sure everyone is. Like, they all deserve a break, after this.
“Most likely, panicking, stalling, maybe threatening us to leave as it’s private property, possible calling of mercenaries, and then maybe sending down a lawyer to out-polite us and trying to get us to sign contracts so we’ll lose our souls or other nasty magical effects,” Rosenberg-chan explains. “All their plans are falling apart, have been for a little while now, thanks to an old friend, and they’re scrambling to catch up, plus a lot of their contact with their Senior Partners has been wonky for a little while now.”
Josuke considers that and nods, feeling himself relax a little. Without much of anything better to do, he retrieves his comb from his pocket and starts smoothing down his hair and feels his fears and anxieties start to smooth out, too. “I’ve had to deal with big corporations and lawyers a couple of times in my job, and Giorno-kun knows what he’s doing to the point he could probably talk them into giving away the company and thanking him for it.” Sure, there’s probably cultural differences, and he’s hardly going to catch everything, but Giorno-kun knows a lot more about international stuff.
As they turn onto the street with the big building he assumes is theirs, he guesses they probably weren’t wrong about the panic. The lights are on even though it’s early in the morning, before opening hours, so it’s probably an all hands on deck situation.
Except Summers-san speaks up again, and this time she sounds...not shaken, exactly, but definitely surprised. “They knew we were coming.” Josuke squints against the glow of the spotlights and—yeah, there’s what looks like a butler or something waiting for them.
