Chapter 28: Through a Mirror Darkly
Main Points:
Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Bleach (I Hope Tomorrow's a Better Day)
Chapter Summary: Ukitake and Shunsui meet the defenders of Sunnydale.
Word Count: 710
Rating: Teen
It’s the similarities that are the most unnerving, Ukitake has to admit. The young warrior—Summers-chan—takes them to an apartment. She’s rather young to be fighting akuma, but Kurosaki-kun is younger, and for better or worse, that’s nothing new. It’s hardly the same type as either Summers-chan or Kurosaki-kun’s schools, but the Shinigami Academy is a school, of sorts. True, the ideal is that the newest recruits aren’t sent into battle without backup, and not up against the most dangerous of creatures, but the world is seldom kind or fair.
Upon their arrival, her teacher, Giles-kun, polished his glasses and abruptly started making tea. He’s being scrupulously polite, but having been a noble if in a minor family, Ukitake is more than familiar with this type of frosty politeness, and while Kisuke-kun’s prediction had been correct and they can’t sense much in this town, his reaction reminded Ukitake directly of Kisuke-kun. He’s ready for a fight, having deemed them to be dangerous, although whether it’s simply having heard of shinigami or a more accurate judgment of their power is a question for which Jyuushirou has no answers, at least, not at the present time. Perhaps this mission will be good in more ways than one—learning tactics to deal with unfamiliar powers or perhaps even learning to copy them can only be helpful, during a time of war.
“The tea is much appreciated, thank you,” Ukitake makes sure to mention.
Giles-kun smiles and pours a little more, movements precise and entirely on edge.
Shunsui looks like he’s about to add something—probably some sort of thanks, as well, because as irreverent as he can be, he does have some manners, and he probably also has realized the distrust, though Giles-kun’s control is such that none of it shows on his face. He is, however, interrupted.
“Aww, come on, killjoy; you’re worrying over nothing.” The young man that walks into the room might be in normal clothes for the World of the Living, and he doesn’t stand out too much physically, but that sword at his side… Beside him, he feels Shunsui’s attention sharpen even as his friend remains a little hunched, his usual attitude of not taking this seriously likely an attempt to reassure Giles-kun they mean no harm (which is, unfortunately, having a bit of the opposite effect). He elects to ignore them, though, continuing to act casually—just like Kyouraku. “Giles, tell Spike he’s overreacting.”
Giles-kun sighs. “Xander, much as I hate to agree with the vampire, even without knowing the exact context of this argument, your past reckless behaviors do not lend much in the way of confidence.”
The vampire—Spike-kun—is the only one who doesn’t bother to hide his own distrust, sneering. “Ta, Watcher. Didn’t know you were entertainin’ guests.”
He manages to make that sound like an innuendo—probably attempting to get under Giles-kun’s skin.
“They’re, uh. Soul Reapers. Like from Giles’ books,” Summers-chan elaborates. “And yeah, I know you’re good at this, but a risk not taken is a risk that doesn’t come around to bite your head off.”
Xander-kun crosses his arms. “Sure, I will when you will,” he states casually.
“As worthwhile as this conversation is, perhaps another time?” Giles-kun interrupts their staring. “Were your efforts fruitful?”
The young man sighs, actually becoming serious. “Nah, no sign of anything, but then, it’s entirely possible I don’t actually know what I’m looking for, and maybe you two are here to help?” He doesn’t sound all too hopeful; more resigned to doing things on his own (or, likely, with Summers-chan’s help).
Ukitake doesn’t have to glance at Kyouraku to know he’ll follow whatever lead his friend sets. “We have our orders, but we’re already interpreting them rather...creatively. If we can help while we’re here, we will certainly try.”
“I like them. Can we keep them?” Summers-chan jokes cheerfully as Xander-kun hesitates, probably trying to decide where to start.
“Don’t get the meaning of ‘orders’, do you, Slayer?” the vampire sneers, but she isn’t insulted.
“Um. Pretty sure this is me we’re talking about.” And it’s certainly amusing and reminds Ukitake of why he enjoys interacting with younger squad members, but Giles-kun pours more tea and Xander-kun finally finds a good starting point.
