Looking After Family

Judgment/Judge Eyes
Chapter Summary: Genda has a question for Yagami.
Word Count: 510
Rating: Gen
Pairing: Yagami/Kaito
Kaito does not appear in person in this one, brief Genda is a perv moment
spoilers are extremely vague but do exist
The man only has to open his mouth for Genda to recognize his mistake. For a detective and a man who passed the bar having simply studied, Takayuki is sometimes extremely unobservant. “Not with your job. With Kaito-san.”
He merely has to wait. Yagami, at first, looks like he’s going to say something vague and irrelevant before he takes in the fact that Genda’s just waiting. Waiting and watching quietly, caring and proud and worried, and quickly rethinks his word choice. “Did Saori tell you?” He sounds calm, but as Genda looks closer he sees that Yagami’s hand casually in his pocket is simply a good cover for the fact that he’s frozen in place, aside from a breath in and out here and there. It’d be silly if it wasn’t so touching, because here’s all the proof he could have needed that despite teasing, despite poking fun, Tak loves him like a father.
And, well, he’d be heartless, if he didn’t return that love to his son.
He raises an eyebrow, smirking. “I haven’t retired yet. These old eyes are still as sharp as ever.”
Yagami ducks his head a little, but he’s smiling, even if he’s a little nervous, still. “I—I’m sorry I’m not bringing back a beautiful lady on my arm…”
“To hell with that.” He barely raises his voice, and his tone is even, but Yagami still flinches. “Sure, I wouldn’t mind the view, but that’s not what matters. I want to make sure you’re happy, and if not, well. I’m sure Mitsugu-kun wouldn’t mind lending a hand to discipline a wayward ex-yakuza.”
Yagami chuckles and shakes his head after a moment, after it all sinks in. “Thank you.” It’s sincere and rare, because he usually likes to tease rather than be honest. “I keep thinking I have something to lose now, and that should scare me, but.” The smile is fierce and joyful and a little wild like his new hairstyle. “I have something to lose now, and it’s great. I’m still new at this and have no idea what I’m doing and the possibility of messing this up with him scares me, but the Mole won’t know what hit him.”
It’s a little odd, but Yagami’s been on his own for so long, having learned to rely solely on himself, and probably forgotten that he could claim things as his own. This probably would feel very new to him.
Genda shakes his head. He’s still terrified of losing more of his little family, but at the same time, well. He also hasn’t seen Yagami this confident in a long time.

“Wait a second, Yagami.” He knows his boy is itching to tear off after the next tailing job and probably is going to jump out the window. Again. (He’s been told doing that gives Genda a heart attack, and he’d been sincere when he apologized, but he almost never remembered to stop anyway.) But the office is empty, meaning that this is a rare chance, and Genda needs to know. “Are you happy?”
