Pillow War
some angst just slipped in
I forgot to explain through A/N, because this is from Kaito's PoV and Tak doesn't correct him: what he means is subpoena, so he's saying 'if you need a witness/character witness, let me know'.
Main Points:
Judgment/Judge Eyes
Chapter Summary: Kaito's present sparks a serious relationship discussion.
Word Count: 840
Rating: Teen; one slight possibly dirty joke
It’s impossible to tell if the delighted, childlike grin is for Kaito or the stuffed animal in his hands, but it’s rare for Tak to look this happy. If he was the type to lie to himself, he’d say his partner lost his innocence, maybe around the time he defended Okubo. He’s not that kind of person. Even when they’d first met, Yagami had a dark, desperate look in his eyes. Which just makes it all the more precious when he can give the man childlike delight again. It doesn’t matter which it is, because he’s the one that put that look there, and that’s what matters.
Tak reverently takes it from him and looks at his shelf, thinking face on.
“Actually, that’s not for your shelf,” Kaito corrects hastily, and continues quickly, because the look of hurt confusion is too much. “I got the jumbo koro-nyan so you could use it as a pillow.” He doesn’t continue that he gets concerned about Tak sleeping on that couch, because when he’d hit that age suddenly sleeping came along with a whole new set of aches, even if the two of them do keep in pretty good shape.
His partner’s not smiling now. It’s more this kind of touched, vulnerable look, but not in a bad way.
The moment stretches, and breaks, and Tak looks away and coughs, trying to cover for his ‘weakness’ just now, because in some ways he’s still the kid run away and living on the streets. “If you’re worrying about how I’m sleeping, you could always just invite me to your bed.”
It’s Kaito’s turn to splutter, but for how smooth Yagami usually is, the way he stumbles over his words slightly says he’s still a little flustered.
Well. He can definitely be honest. “You know you’re always welcome.” Even if it’ll drive Masaharu nuts because he hasn’t had warning to clean, and he knows in most cases it hasn’t and shouldn’t matter but for some reason Tak the Partner is a whole new category from Tak the Friend or Tak the Superior. He hasn’t managed to work out why, yet, only that he is, even though Tak definitely isn’t the type to care in the first place.
They’re both blushing, now, and staring at each other awkwardly, and this isn’t how he imagined it’d go, at all.
“He won’t replace you, you know,” Tak says abruptly, and something about his tone says he’s being genuine and allowing himself this vulnerable moment where he let down his walls even if it scares the living daylights out of him. It’s amazing.
“Huh?” he asks, because that really was out of the blue, even if it’s probably that way because he really is forcing himself to do this.
“Koro-nyan,” his partner clarifies. “You’re still a better pillow. But it’s good to have a replacement, because it’s not like you can be here all the time.”
Tak still likes having his own place, even if that consists of a tiny room doubling as business and apartment, and Kaito definitely can’t stay here every day. But there’s definitely a pull between them that’d been there since the beginning, even if neither of them could explain what they were feeling at the time. …Maybe this is something they need to talk about, even though that’s not their style.
“I thought you still wanted some alone time,” Kaito states. Tak’s eyes widen slightly, and then, hesitantly, he reaches out and takes Kaito’s hand.
“I do, yeah, but I—I’m not trying to reject you or anything. I’m sorry if that’s been making you feel…” He swallows, rather than finishing his statement, and Kaito quickly shakes his head, squeezing his partner’s hand.
“I’m fine,” he states with emphasis. “I’m trying not to be annoying, but this is new. I’m counting on you to tell me when I’m going too far.”
Tak leans in slightly, and he doesn’t even have to say a word for Kaito to open his arms, his partner leaning into him like a dog begging for pets. Having him this close feels like Kaito could protect him from the world like this. “Honestly, I don’t even know, though I’ll tell you when I figure it out. I guess part of me is still trying to prove I’m a competent adult.”
“You already are,” Kaito states patiently, feeling that slight pang that comes up each and every single time Tak’s insecurities appear.
The man chuckles. “Oh, I’m not trying to prove it to you. I’m trying to prove it to myself.” He hesitates, then continues quietly. “It’s like all the evidence I’ve gathered so far says I am, but a couple eyewitness testimonies keep bothering me.”
Law nerd, the ex-yakuza thinks to himself with amusement, but doesn’t say it out loud. He does follow up the chuckle with a snort of his own, though. “Lemme know if you need a sub sometime.”
“I’ll do that.” The amused warmth isn’t lost in the slightest as Tak burrows slightly deeper into his arms.
