Scheming for the Greater Good

I was feeling kind of bad about all this angst that Miyamoto was going through and trying to figure out what was going on, and then realized "oh yeah, this is the Shimano effect".  In other words, Kumai kind of ruined Miyamoto's ability to trust that people are being genuine.  That, and I wanted to take a step toward the eventual end goal of 'yakuza power couple' with Miyamoto and Cordy, parallel to some AU headcanons about Majima and Makoto teaming up (and, of course, getting married) to become even more of a force of nature than canon Majima.  So all of that came together for this fic.
hey, relatively short notes this time!

Cast of Characters
(in order of appearance/mention): Miyamoto Suna (Xander), Matriarch of the Miyamoto-gumi/Miyamoto Family, a Direct Family of the Amaya-kai, (occasionally Sunao or Nao-kun as Miyamoto's genderfluid)
Akiyama Yoko (Willow), Matriarch of the Akiyama-gumi/Akiyama Family, a Direct Family of the Amaya-kai
Miyamoto Cordelia (Cordy), as herself (and married to Suna)
Hattori Rinka (Snyder), Matriarch of the Kazami-gumi/Kazami Family, a Direct Family of the Amaya-kai
Amaya-kai, the Amaya Clan, the Yakuza Clan that a lot of them are in
Natsukawa Renyo (Buffy), Chairwoman of the Amaya-kai (and Slayer)
Kumai Atae (Jesse), Former Matriarch of the Kumai-gumi/Kumai Family, a Direct Family of the Amaya-kai, replaced after the events of A Cup Overflows and Phoenix Spirit
Inoue Yuu (Andrew), Co-Captain of the Miyamoto-gumi (so basically directly under Miyamoto)
Author's Notes: In this universe, Japan is run by the women.  Kansai-ben, the "more slangy" version of Japanese compared to Kanto-ben (spoken in Tokyo), makes an appearance again.  The Yakuza is slightly more tolerated because they are the main force keeping the demons at bay in Japan.
Definitions:
Civilians = non-yakuza
akuma=demons

        “An’ she’s takin’ an interest in fashion.”  Akiyama’s spies have already told her as much, going into detail about the almost delirious enthusiasm and the threats.  Well…her usual tailor was involved, so presumably knew the truth: when Suna was in a good mood, they were more warnings than anything.  It didn’t mean she wouldn’t follow through on whatever she said, just to be a woman of her word, but you didn’t have to worry about her just stabbing you out of nowhere.  She wasn’t as unpredictable.  Now, her moods could be mercurial, so you had to keep an eye out for a sudden shift in temper, but she tended to be more even-keeled when dealing with civilians.
        “I didn’t think you had any interest in fashion.”  Not that Suna always looks bad.  Sometimes, she manages to pick out a decent-looking outfit, though Yoko guesses it’s from some movie or game Suna likes.
        “Hell, ya know I don’t!  This mug’s in the dictionary under ‘walking fashion disaster’.  Just happy she’s startin’ ta take one.”  Privately, Akiyama smirks.  It sounds like Miyamoto’s finally starting to settle down, although maybe not the way Hattori would have wished.  Renyo and Yoko had brainstormed as much as they could, and ‘relationship’ was the last thing they could think of to try.
        Miyamoto might look put-together, from a distance, but the Chairwoman and fellow Matriarch hadn’t known Suna for years without getting some sense of the woman.  Miyamoto’s sanity was dangling from a fraying thread, just a few strands from toppling into the abyss.  Not altogether uncommon, especially when guarding against akuma incursion, but they both hated to see it.  The result was a mix of things: her parents dying when they were kids, from a situation she refused to explain even when asked, years of being groomed as some kind of sycophant to Kumai, the aftermath of the battle where she lost her eye, her uncertainty about where her identity fits in everything, her worry about her new relationship.  Most of it is fair enough, which just makes things worse.  It’s sensible to feel the pain, but they can’t scold her for being silly, and it’s harder to cheer her up.  The worst part is the lack of trust.  Not that it’s conscious.  Not that it’s ridiculous.  She had been lied to by her Matriarch over the most basic of things for years.  Understanding that Renyo’s really telling the truth that yes, Sunao’s fine, or Akiyama’s not bothered by listening to Suna prattle on about the latest zombie flick might take a little while.  Giving her her own Direct Family?  Maybe Renyo messed up when giving her the position, made it clear that hunting down Kumai was the excuse for the rest of the world, not for her.  Wanting her close, not at a respectful distance?  Maybe not consciously, but Suna’s waiting for the dagger in the back—or in the other eye.  As for the rest they hadn’t considered, they hadn’t thought about the last one, but they really should have.  Perfect love and happiness is a little unrealistic, when Akiyama considers the matter, but at least they seem to—finally—be getting into the spirit of things.
        Maybe, finally, she’s starting to feel things are stable again.  Like she can trust the ground under her feet again.  That’d be an improvement for sure.  Then again, Cordy-kun probably needs similar reassurance there’s no pranksters with rugs.  Given how little they’d thought about that, it’s a good thing this whole plot didn’t explode in their faces.  “I’ll have you know the outfits I picked out for you were perfectly ‘in’, at the time I picked them out.”
        Suna snorts, a little subdued, but she’s even less hesitant calling her out on that one than normal.  “Stylin’ as the pirate thing looks on me, it ain’t been in season since the 1600s…not that I’m kickin’ up a fuss ‘bout it.  I like bein’ one of a kind.  Now, hate ta cut this short, but Inoue-chan’s been ringin’ me fer the last five minutes, so either there’s a meetin’ slipped my mind, or one ‘a my gal’s set HQ on fire.  Again.  See ya.”
        “We’ll have to do this again,” Yoko suggests, and Miyamoto doesn’t even argue.  The Matriarch carefully waits until she’s sure Miyamoto’s hung up before she pumps her fist in the air.  Victory!  Well, one small skirmish on the path, but it’s a start.
