As Giles promises, it’s not that hard to cast the spell to keep him in his own body. It feels weird. Kind of like…a part of him just got locked away. But then, he has no comparison, since he’s never had to have a spell cast on him so he’ll stop accidentally falling out of his body, and it’s probably meant to feel weird.
He still has knowledge of Japanese, and every now and then he’ll accidentally say a sentence in Japanese, but he’s able to read and write English, now, so he’s putting that firmly in the ‘this is good’ category. Given that that’s the only weird thing that’s happened since he went back to work, the guys have slowly begun trusting him again, like particularly aloof cats.
Spike is strangely quiet, like he’s plotting something. He very well might be, for all they know. It’s not like he’s the most trustworthy vampire they’ve ever seen. Just because he can’t bite them doesn’t mean he can’t scheme something nefarious. Like stealing all of Buffy’s weapons and selling them off. Hopefully he’s not planning on stealing the sword or anything. Not that it probably is cursed, but it’d suck anyway.
It’s even weirder a couple days later when the demon bursts into his basement. Of course, that’s…well, not common, but not uncommon either. He’s been moping—no, manfully brooding, which is different from whatever it is Angel does—a little about the fact that Anya hasn’t called him back or visited again, and has been unsuccessfully trying to decide whether he should just tell her he’s nearly died, or whether she should hear that from the others because she might realize he’s trying to make her feel guilty for not having heard about it. It’s actually kind of a welcome distraction, but the point is that he can see something weird about the demon.
He’s been (successfully so far) trying not to notice the things that he’s noticing now, like how he can still see the human face as a ghostly afterimage on a vampire with a game face on, or that Sunnydale has a lot less ghosts than he would’ve thought. He’s also been ignoring the repeated dreams of that weird sand flat place. Part of him realizes that ignoring things like this is how they get into trouble most of the time. Most of him is just hoping that if he ignores it, it’ll go away.
This demon has one of those ghostly forms inside, like it’s possessing someone, maybe. He can’t make out its features well enough to have a clue who, though. It mostly seems interested in making with the growly and weirdly threatening gestures. He’s pretty sure it’s trying to communicate, which is a little creepy, not to mention frustrating. “I don’t suppose you speak Japanese?” he tries, and other than it getting more frantic, nothing changes. Eventually he just has to shrug and shake his head. “I don’t think I can help you.”
It growls, but if he’s reading this right, it looks like it’s upset. Or deciding to eat him. He’s not sure. “Sorry?” he adds.
It growls again and then leaves, breaking the railing a bit along the way. He’ll have to fix that, and sooner rather than later.
Later, when he hears that’d been Giles, he wonders about how many languages Spike speaks, and also whether he’s going to owe the vampire a little more than just entertainment value.
