Duty (part i)
Okay, this was written years ago. I didn't like it much at the time, but upon rereading I think it's better than I thought. (and yeah, we're back to prewritten stuff. RL is a bear. And not a friendly bear like Teddie.)
(in other news, seriously, not enough people know of/play Devil Summoner. it's an underrated part of the SMT franchise!! & it's one of my favorites, other than Persona. it should have its own anime by now because I would watch that SOOOO much!)

Devil Summoner Raidou Kuzunoha
Summary: Narumi wakes up with the feeling that something isn't right...
Word Count: 825
Rating: Gen
“Do you know who I am?” he asked quietly, in a tone that commanded effectively accompanied by that expression.
Narumi blinked. “Kid, are you all right?”
The fierce look only got stronger in the grey eyes. If he thought the summoner would hurt him…he could see why the average joe didn’t pick a fight or argue with this one. Still, he rolled his eyes. “Raidou-kun. Mind telling me why I’m laying down?” He thought for a moment, considering their previous adventures, and added, “…Are we in a fix again?”
He was taken aback when he actually recognized when emotions flitted across the young man’s face—briefly, but they were still there. Relief. Annoyance. A hint of anger. Since when was the agent of Yatagarasu so expressive? The hand was removed, and the teenager took a deep breath to calm himself. Cute, but Narumi couldn’t help himself in a situation like this.
“Worrying about me like a mother hen? I’m flattered.”
Anger, again visible, fluttered like a trapped butterfly and was gone on the wind. The cap was tugged slightly lower, a gesture, Narumi knew, that indicated the young summoner was feeling embarrassed. “Given that you couldn’t even recognize me or tell me my name earlier, I hardly think such concern was out of place.” Said smoothly, but with a hint of a sting that the detective took seriously.
He’d already known the latest Kuzunoha had guts, but it seemed he was learning to be a little more outspoken. Still disguised, of course-kid couldn’t ditch his manners entirely. But still, he wouldn’t have dared before, in Narumi’s memory. Did I really scare him that badly?
Before he could ask what had happened, the door opened, and Tae walked in. He groaned, throwing an arm over his face in a gesture that was perhaps more dramatic than it really needed to be. Still, it got the job done. He heard her annoyed huff and peeked one eye open. “Tae, you’re one nosy dame. Can’t even wait until I’ve recovered before barging in here to bum some coffee and information.”
Raidou still appeared tense, and he quickly left the lazy detective’s side to fix her a cuppa—no, Raidou, don’t encourage her! If you give her coffee, that’s just a draw to keep her coming back. Like feeding a stray cat. Not that he minded the inquisitive reporter as a person. He admired her spunk. A modern bird like her in the newspaper biz was just the right sorta gig for a gal like that, and when she wasn’t bugging him or stealing his precious coffee or withholding money she’d promised to pay him, she was all right.
Problem was, the last three things were all she did.
“As if! I was coming to see if you were any better, but see if I ever show concern about you again, you lousy piker!” She was mad, too. Huh. What had happened, really? She composed herself quickly, though, putting on a smile. “Anyway, it isn’t all about you, believe it or not. You holding in there, Raidou-kun?”
She’s way too old for you, kiddo, Narumi wanted to say, but kept his noisy flapping tongue in his mouth where it belonged. It wasn’t his business-much-anyway. And why would he say something like that?
He didn’t miss the sharp nod or the trembling hands. He really had worried them both. Maybe he shouldn’t be trying to antagonize them, even if it was the little game he and Tae played.
“Don’t worry your pretty heads over little ol’ me,” he stated calmly, though he wasn’t sure who he was mainly addressing. “You’re not getting rid of me that easily.”
Raidou actually clenched his fists and abruptly moved toward the coat rack, where his cape waited patiently. “I apologize, Asakura-san, but would it trouble you too much to watch over Narumi-san? I have errands that must be performed.”
If Tae hadn’t been there, Narumi Shouhei would probably have questioned the devil summoner on the sudden need to run and do ‘errands’, which he figured more likely than not were the boy’s own work patrolling the streets and keeping the Capitol safe. He couldn’t say anything in front of Tae, though, so he just kept his mouth shut.
“Of course not! You go right ahead!” She was shockingly cheerful. So, the bird could be polite to Raidou, and not to him. That seemed a mite unfair. Narumi opened his mouth to protest, but the look from Raidou as he put on the capelet with a dramatic swoosh and exited the detective agency made him hold the words inside instead.

Narumi groaned as he tried to sit up, only to find a very strong and insistent something keeping him down. He yawned, blinking, and looked up to see the summoner, warning with a glare that he wasn’t going to put up with anything. Which was a pain. Kid needed to loosen up now and then.
“Do you know who I am?” he asked quietly, in a tone that commanded effectively accompanied by that expression.
