The Gift, Part IV

Well, this day...could have gone better.
Two computer crashes within half an hour of each other.  Finding & dusting off my old laptop, only to get a not-the-best-grade on my practice exam.  Then my old laptop decides it doesn't want to play nicely with the internet.  And learning that Team Millennium got targeted by the latest anti-copyright infringement 'instead of chopping down a few trees that really are causing problems, let's just burn down the whole forest' policy.
Sometimes, life sucks.  Fortunately, there's always something to make you smile, somewhere.
...Sadly, that means that this next installment is perhaps not as upbeat as I'd like it to be given my mood, but it's important.
Also, guess what I've been doing while calculus...

Main Points: Persona 4 Playthrough Mild AU
Chapter Summary: Souji and Yosuke head to Okina for their date.

Word Count: 951
Rating: T, Yosuke swears in his head

As expected, Teddie can hardly can the waterworks, clinging first to Yosuke blubbering something about how proud he is “his big brother has all grown up”, then to Souji, at which point the only recognizable word is “Sensei”.  There might also be something about “aww-inspiring couple”, but Yosuke would rather pretend he never heard that.  Mama Hanamura is torn between acting like Teddie and kidnapping the two of them, insisting that they spend the evening at home, but they manage to fend the two of them off, Souji expressing extreme, polite regret, but insisting that he’d had plans.
It’s a really good thing that Dad Hanamura isn’t here, considering that the last time he’d seen Souji flirting over the counter as Yosuke checks him out, he’d recommended Junes brand condoms.  Luckily not in front of the whole store, or Yosuke would’ve considered falling into the TV world and not coming out.  It’s support, in a weird way, but it’s not like Yosuke needs anyone else bringing that up before he’s ready to even talk to his Partner about that stuff.  Seriously talk.
Souji leads him to the train, and they take it.  He almost refuses, at first, to even tell Yosuke which stop they’re getting off at, but eventually admits it’s Okina.
They head to the movie theater, which is a bit of a surprise.  But then, they only went out to see a movie in the summer once, didn’t they?  It’s...not exactly what he’d been expecting, but then, he hadn’t even seen the trailer for this one.  Kuro?” he asks, and there’s a somewhat sheepish smile on Souji’s face.
“It’s all right if you’re not intere—” Souji begins, and Yosuke quickly shakes his head.
“If nothing else, I’m curious about it.  Besides, you have pretty good taste, Partner.”  Given that Souji only really reacts after he buys the tickets and a medium size popcorn, he hadn’t realized that was flirting at first.
He’s also impressively resistant to Yosuke’s whining about how he’d like a bigger size of popcorn.  “I don’t want you to run out of room for dinner later, and we get one free refill anyway,” he points out with relentless logic.
The story’s about a man who discovers his shadow is alive.  At first, he worries that he’s going insane, or that the shadow will hurt someone, but eventually he realizes it’s just a part of himself, and he can sense the darkness in others through ‘kuro’.  He ends up saving a few others, and eventually winds up foiling a big criminal plot.
Yosuke had entered the theater curious, intrigued, ready for an adventure.  He exits solemn but thoughtful.
“And that scene with the laugh was clearly a reference,” Souji states, excitement in his voice, before realizing that Yosuke’s quiet, almost silent, beside him.  “What’s wrong?  Didn’t you like it?”
The laugh is short, and suddenly has him worrying that the brunet is mad at him for some reason.  “Well, what was it based on?” is the only answer he gets, and it’s not very illuminating.
“Well, it’s not obvious, but they made a few references to a radio program.  I used to listen to it all the time, since it was the sort of thing that didn’t distract me from my homework.  Then again, it could’ve been two removed, since there are a lot of other superhero-type characters based on the same sort of premise…”  Souji hesitates.  “…Yosuke?”
“Well, if I didn’t know better,” Yosuke responds, “I would’ve said it was based on us.  Our Personas, and what’s going on in Inaba.”  His voice is quieter, hushed so as not to carry to other moviegoers exiting, but it’s low and serious and Souji realizes he doesn’t see this side of Yosuke very much, especially since they haven’t had anything else to talk about with the case for a while.  The Lieutenant.  The guy who’s fairly impressive, even in a team with a professional detective, at putting the clues together.  He bites his lip.  “I mean, don’t get me wrong, it’s not like I didn’t enjoy it.  It’s just, well.  Shadows, and taming them to become a power to help you save others.  The whole criminal plot thing.  I mean, it’s easy enough to forget, when we’re just dealing with the Shadows in the TV world, but…there is a murderer out there, who’s killed people, and…”  His shoulders slump.  “I don’t want anyone else to die,” he states, voice scratchy.  “I’m sorry, I’m just ruining today, huh?”
Souji hesitates, then pulls him into the Chagall Café.  He doesn’t plan on having the coffee today, doesn’t plan on passing out, but he knows Yosuke would appreciate the chance to pull himself together before he cries in front of a city crowd.  At least it’s not Inaba, where everyone would know them, where he’d have to deal with people talking about being a crybaby or whatever at school.  “You are not ruining anything, Yosuke.  If anything, that’s me, since I planned, well.  Obviously not all of this.  I don’t enjoy seeing you…hurt.  If I—”  He surprises himself with the fierce emotion, but lets it show.  Sometimes, Yosuke needs to know how much he makes Souji feel.  “If I could bring out any of my Personas, if I could cast Diarama on you, here, in the real world, to stop the pain, I would.  If I could do anything to help…”
That earns a smile.  “You really like to take everything on yourself, huh?  It’s not either of our faults, so, let’s go on with that, huh?”
Cautiously, Souji smiles back, suddenly feeling a little stuffy in the dress shirt, but it’d seemed like a good idea at first.
