Generals of Nyarlathotep

Aon:

This week on Aon’s Believe it or Don’t.  I’ve heard a lot of people talking about these characters, so I thought I’d give them a name and a place to put all the information we know about them up.  They’re now called Immortals.

Their very existence is shrouded in fog.  I’ve heard some people, let’s call them A and B, discussing them.  Are they secret bosses?  Dev characters?  Hacker characters?  Something else entirely?  It’s obvious that they have powers that aren’t usually possible.  Enemy characters are sometimes given powers inaccessible to PCs, but are they really meant to be here?

I’ve asked GM after GM, Dev after Dev, and so far the answer is universal.  “We have no idea what you’re talking about.”  Is it a secret to do with the heart of the game itself?  Or are the people who programmed the game and monitor for strange character activity unaware of these foes?

The idea that they’re secret bosses is also less than convincing when you hear that another character, let’s call him C, was grouped with the legendary Hanakotoba.  Now, Hanakotoba is one of the best at playing his character in the game.  C and Hanakotoba split up to more quickly complete the mission in the dungeon, when C got a strange, short message from his friend.  He arrived just in time to watch as an enemy that looked like a monster devoured his friend in messy chunks.  There was blood everywhere.

C was lucky enough to be a Hidden One, and he watched, quaking in his boots.  The monster shifted, and suddenly it looked like a man with an ever-changing mask.  He felt sick again, just looking at the mask.  The man nodded, looking satisfied, and left the area, but for hours after C couldn’t move, until he suddenly got a feeling of great danger.  Immediately he used his skill to jump to the Clan home and logged off.  Now, if Hanakotoba couldn’t fight back as a level capped Ultimate at the time, how is it supposed to be a secret boss?  Secret Bosses may be tough, but there should be a way to win, and if Hanakotoba couldn’t’ even fight back, how is anyone else supposed to?  (Hanakotoba, by the way, then followed the characteristic behavior pattern of a CP until he disappeared for good and hasn’t returned to the game.  That is, if he even left.)

Immortals, then are very powerful, more powerful than any other character in the game.  (I’d honestly be interested in an Immortal vs Dev fight to see the power distinction between the two.)  They hurt characters to a level of violence you don’t generally see unless it’s a horror game.  And if you go back to some of the areas they still haven’t been able to scrub the blood away.  They have some way of appearing and disappearing from the areas, and you won’t see them hanging out in the police station like regular characters.  As hidden characters, they don’t log in or out, and they don’t enter areas normally.

For hidden characters, it’s really hard to have a list of Immortals to worry about, but a couple descriptions have been posted several times, so I’m listing them as the Immortals we know of.

1) Victorian barbed wire lady

2) ghostly gun guy

3) odd alien winged lady with dress and crown

Danyr: The thing about Hanakotoba might seem to be just Aon throwing things out there, again, but I’ve actually heard it.

anonymous: I would happen to be C, actually, and…it’s terrifying.  I always feel like I’m being watched now.  Aon forgot to mention that Hanakotoba used a couple of his skills, because I saw his SP start to go down really, really fast.  That’s when I got the feeling that something was wrong and went back to check on him.  Of course, I didn’t think it was anything like that!  I’m glad that I was a Hidden One, and went into stealth mode, and had just gotten the stealth upgrade.  I don’t like to think what would’ve happened if the thing—Immortals, did you call them, Aon?—had seen me…

Hayato: Hanakotoba isn’t so great!  I’d like to see Saki go up against one of these so-called ‘Immortals’!  Bet she’d prove that they were mortals after all.

Koual:

I hate to say this, but Saki told me she got a message from Ruwan kind of like the OP for ‘missing friend’.  Which is (maybe) why she hasn’t been logging on as much lately.

…I'll miss Ruwan-senpai too.

Nayoko:

Hanakotoba’s actually pretty good!  He (along with Saki-senpai) is listed on several of the lists of greatest ISO characters of all time

Seimei: It’s sad to hear that, but it makes sense why neither you nor she wants to talk about it.  I hope that Ruwan recovers soon.

Aon: Further rumors from your host of Aon’s Believe it or Don’t: It’s said that Immortals can engage in PvP combat without the duel system (obviously, as very few people in their right minds would say ‘yeah, sure, I want to fight you nameless thing from the abyss’), and if you lose (which, given that even one of the best characters in the game couldn’t beat one is likely), you’ll become a CP.

J’daror: I found a list on a statue in one of the Event Missions of the Generals of Nyarlathotep.  Here’s a list of the names.  Joker, Lord of Dreams.  Ceirahn, Siren of the Abyss.  Fienahr, Watcher of the Eternal Flame.  Strega, Master of War.  Nyx, The Mother Night.  Deva, Seeker of Twilight.  Raedwulf, Blackest of Lies.  Vaspran, Game of Hunger.  I propose that these Immortals are the generals of the Crawling Chaos, since, seriously, how could something this evil exist in the game and not be related to the Lovecraftian monster?

Taryl: What if that actually is Nyar-Nyar, just different Aspects of him?

Manabu: …I could see that happening in this game, actually.

Nyag’thatha: We are not worried about our Clan members who have met or become one with the greater Design of Chaos.  We celebrate the births of those CPs. --From the Cultists

Kano: Would you Reversed go away?  You creep me the hell out.

Imaizumi: Did you just make this up so that you could include more for your artwork?

Irai: Aon doesn't draw, clearly.  ...I do though.  And wasn't there something about an artist girlfriend?

Morimasa: Got tired of drawing characters probably

Ghar: Am I the only one who thinks the fangirling over monsters like this is really kind of creepy?

Dar’augh: It’s just a game, calm don!  It’s not like they’re real or they can do anything to you in RL, so take a deep breath and repeat to yourself, “It’s just a game”

Adiss: …like jumanji is ‘just a game’?

Kusumoto: SOMEONE ELSE WHO KNOWS WHAT JUMANJI IS sorry, what was the point?
