Ace Attorney AU (Mein Prinz)
Chapter Summary: Apollo receives some training.
Word Count: 1003
Rating: K
Note: Apollo Justice spoilers. Probably spoilers for the rest of the series, too.
Apollo can’t help but feel a little insulted, and definitely a little intimidated by the light burning in those deep blue eyes. Still, he’s also a little…touched? But then, maybe it’s best to think of their relationship in one way: Klavier, for whatever reason, is fond of him, enough maybe to keep him alive, like, perhaps, a pet human. That’s not to say that he’s not going to play with him, but keeping Apollo alive is definitely a priority. “Can I at least eat something before you start beating me black and blue with that sword of yours?” he snarks back, because apparently he hasn’t learned his lessons about ticking off demons.
To his surprise, the Undying One throws back his head in a laugh, and when he looks back his eyes are much more human. The fangs that he’d thought he’d seen are gone, too. “Ja, ja, I suppose you must have that. Here, I got something for us both.” To his surprise, it’s a roll. With jam. Honestly, it’s a little shocking that the demon had thought of him, and that he’s eating, too…
“Fights make me hungry,” he explains, and—
Wait. He can’t remember anything. They’re not at the inn anymore. And Klavier’s sudden insistence that he learn to fight…
“I got attacked, didn’t I?” He feels a little sheepish.
The demon looks suddenly serious. “Ja. The lessons on spotting a demon or devil and telling the various types will come later. For now, eat.” The demon also appears to be eating meat and cheese, which is just odd.
When they get started…well, it’s even stranger. The Tainted Soul is more patient than Kristoph, and better at explaining. He refuses to move on to another technique until Apollo has mastered it. There are visibly times where he’s holding himself back, particularly when Apollo lands a lucky hit, but he has better control over himself than the prince would’ve thought. He tries to block an attack, but Klavier shakes his head at that.
“Nein, Stirn. Skye’s sword is, ja, magic. It won’t break against a demon’s attack, and in fact will probably survive most devil’s attacks, but both demons and devils are stronger than you. They could break your arm at the least if you attempt to block. It’s better to try to dodge.”
“But aren’t demons faster than I am?” Apollo asks in frustration.
Fake human lips purse. “Yes, but they also aren’t used to targets trying to dodge. Perhaps if we can get you a magic shield to escort that sword, you may block instead. In the meantime, if you can dodge at least partly out of the way and hit the target, that’s enough to stagger most demons. Devils, well…let’s hope we don’t run into too many of those.”
“You keep talking about that as if demons and devils aren’t the same thing,” he points out, and that definitely earns a frown.
“I cannot believe Kristoph didn’t teach you that.” The stare is more than a little uncomfortable. It takes him a few seconds before he gives up and merely sighs. “Demons are the cannon fodder. They’re much weaker. For me, demons are only a challenge in numbers, which is why they usually attack in such a pattern. Usually, though, they can’t even muster up enough in that case.” He shrugs. “If you can manage to wound me, you can probably hold your own against a demon. We still have to work on protecting you from their powers, but one thing at a time. They’re still stronger than you, so like I said—duck, and that pretty forehead of yours will remain intact.” Apollo steps back as the demon flicks his forehead. “There’s different classes of devil, too, but I don’t think that’ll be too relevant to you. Devils have much more power. I’m one, and I’m strong, even for devils.”
The smile he gives definitely isn’t human. “So, go all out. Don’t worry about hurting me. Even stabbing me in the heart won’t kill me. We won’t move on to protecting you until you prove to me you can hurt me.”
At first, it’s hard. He had started falling into the trap, thinking of Klavier as human, not a demon—devil. After accidentally stabbing him in the thigh and purposefully stabbing him in the back with nothing but encouragement, though, it was easier to remind himself that this thing isn’t human.
He almost lops off the Undying One’s head, and it’s only Klavier’s hand grabbing his sword, bleeding fingers and all, and holding it as if it’s nothing that prevents the move. For the first time, he sees a spiked collar around the throat. It’s an odd fashion statement, really, but then, this is a devil, whose view of the human world is probably necessarily skewed. “I think I can consider you ready to fight, should a fight actually occur. A tip—beheading is usually a good method of disposing of demons and devils.” He tugs the blade away from his neck, forces it down into the ground. Apparently not too hard for Apollo to retrieve, though, because a heave at the hilt gets it back out. He’s terrifyingly smiley for someone who’s still bleeding. “You can take a brief rest and then we’ll continue.”

Apollo opens his eyes to see the devil looming above him with a perfectly pleasant smile that scares him, honestly. It takes him a few moments of panicked confusion to realize he’s been slung over the back of their horse like a sack of flour, which is definitely kind of undignified, but then, no one would suspect he was the Crown Prince that way, so he supposes it’s effective. He’d been looking forward to breakfast, though. “You, Herr Stirn, are going to learn how to fight and resist demons’ and devils’ powers. To my satisfaction. Perhaps Kristoph thought you were ready for the battlefield, but he was vastly mistaken und I’m not going to fail my task simply because you were weak.”
