Eventually, a yawning Yosuke came out, this time dressed in red pants and an orange v-neck shirt. He’d also grabbed his orange headphones and…music device. Angel had had better things to do than pay attention to the latest technological developments, but it seemed some of the other denizens of the magical world didn’t agree. He rubbed at the back of his neck and grabbed a furry white hoodie from the coat rack. The vampire blinked but didn’t argue. There was no real point to it. If Yosuke thought he’d be fine in the roasting L.A. weather in a jacket, that was his business. He grabbed the orange messenger bag by the door and straightened, nodding to the vampire that he was ready to go.
“So, what’s up?” he asked quietly, nodding and smiling at an old lady down the hall who blushed and smiled back.
Angel heaved a sigh. “We’ve got a cursed magical artifact. The resident expert in magic can tell us that it’s Japanese, but it’s not his area of expertise. We’ve got a couple Bakemono threatening a group of civilians searching for it. I don’t want to hand it over, even to save lives, without knowing that it can’t do worse damage.”
The sudden stiffness in the kid’s face showed that he understood how badly this could go. The serious look in his eyes didn't reach his tone of voice, though. “So, what, I’m coming over to your place, wherever that is, and identifying it for you? And you shoulda told me you’ve got a team now. I mean, that’s great news.”
He shook his head. “Sometimes I wonder.”
Yosuke stopped walking, forcing the vampire to stop too. The look in his eyes now was deadly serious. “Yeah, you might be putting them all in harm’s way. I hate Angelus as much as anyone else does. But guys like you and me, we can’t just float free doing whatever we feel like. That’s the best way to invite the darkness inside. If you’ve got attachments to the world, if you care, that’s the best safeguard you have against the coming storm. Not detachment, not hiding.”
He refused to look away until Angel smiled sadly and gave a short nod, and then strode on cheerfully as if nothing had happened. “I’m starving. Do you think I could possibly stop along the way for something-anything-to eat?”
They headed into the sewers, the vampire helping his friend down those last couple steps. He didn’t bother to answer.
