Lazy Day at May Queen

Today, I was in a discussion group with another bisexual person (who was actually dating, unlike me), an asexual person, and a professor (who's married and has a kid).  And it made me realize that this genderbent Okabe can be read pretty much any way (gender, sexual orientation) that you so choose.  (Which makes it fun to write.  Part of why I liked writing the earlier Fade Away.  I like playing with ambiguity.)
She's trans?  Go with that.  She's a girl.  All right.  She's asexual?  If you want.  She likes Luka (or Mayuri, or Kurisu)?  *She used as convenient pronoun, replace at your discretion, Reader!  It's like a choose your own adventure with interpretation.  There's probably evidence for it somewhere.  Go wild.
(I also like that Daru and Okarin still have that dynamic.  The conversations change, the relationships don't.  They're still good friends, even if Daru thinks Okarin is off 'her' rocker.)

Chapter Summary:
Just another lazy day at May Queen Nyan-Nyan.
Word Count: 700
Rating: teen

After school, of course, they end up at May Queen Nyan-nyan.  Daru glares nearly the whole time as Faris converses with her, but, well, it’s not as if just anyone can ignore the Mad Scientist.  It takes a special breed to be this interested, of course, but Faris is nothing but special.  A thought occurs to Daru, though, and he’s practically drooling by the end.
“Why do you always come here with me?”  His smile looks a little smug.  “There’s a butler café in Akihabara.”
Kyouma shrugs (it’s partly to keep an eye on her hostage, as well as lab mem #003, but she’s sure he knows that without her having to state it out loud) and downs the sugar-filled shake in the hope that it wakes her up.  Nothing.  She’ll have to wait for the caffeinated Dr. P in the lab.  Mad scientists were allowed to get in ‘I’m overheating and unmotivated’ moods too, right?  A melodramatic pout, complete with swishing lab coat.
Yes.  She can see it now.
“The thing I’m getting at is…what’s your type?  What turns you on?”
Oh.  Daru’s had the thought before, but this is a new phrasing.  Before she realizes it, she’s out of her seat, hands held in the air to draw attention to her words.  “The great Hououin Kyouma has no need of such paltry concerns as a mere relationship!  Science is the great calling, the destruction of society the fruit of my labor!  And even if it were not a distraction from my higher calling, it wouldn’t do to put more lives in jeopardy from Organization forces!”
Daru listens patiently and then acts like she hasn’t said anything.  It’s annoying.  It’s normal.  Which just makes things even more annoying.
“Please.  We’re good friends, right?” he begs.
She sits back down slowly.  What had she been thinking, expending that much energy when she hadn’t even had a replacement stash of energy in the form of food available yet?
“I have gathered quite a collection of data, and it is an undisputed fact that you are the most perverted person on the planet.”  And she’s seen the internet.
“Thank you.”  His second in command isn’t going to give this up.  “Okarin.”
She sighs, scrabbling at her untidy, short hair.  “I suppose I’ve checked out some yaoi and yuri in my time.  For purely scientific purposes.”
There’s a satisfied sound that comes from Daru’s mouth, and she sighs, resting her head on her palm.  “You’re my right-hand man.  Don’t break your wrist, hacka, we may need it.”
He doesn’t argue with the hacka thing.  He’s definitely distracted.  “I would pay money to watch you and Faris.”
“Good lord, man, your priorities are completely out of whack.  We’re lucky that a pretty Organization Agent hasn’t approached you yet, or you would’ve blabbed all of our secrets by now.  They don’t even need torture; a simple flirtation would have you spilling your soul!”  She allows herself the theatrical gestures.  This, at least, is giving her just a bit of energy.  “Not to mention the fact that you are breaking your waifus’ hearts.  Do they know you’re cheating on them?”
“You are not telling them,” Daru states flatly, successfully distracted, then sighs.  “Okay, okay, Ms. One Track Mind.  What are you doing after this, then?”
“I thought I’d go browsing for more parts.  Perhaps they might spark the idea for a new invention.”  Right now, she needs any inspiration she can get.  She takes a slower sip from her glass.
That, too, gets Daru’s attention.  Well, mechanics and computers is his third love.  Or is the list order wrong?  “Well, if you find any computer fans, email me.  Mayushii doesn’t dust enough to keep our lab computer-friendly.  If we’re having problems with the heat already, then Windows-tan has to be feeling uncomfortable.”
“What a pity you can’t see her undress.”  She stands, placing her hands in the pockets—at least the jacket is cold, given she’d had to leave it in her locker.  She suddenly dashes out with a laugh before Daru can realize she hasn’t paid, yet again.  At least Kyouma could take advantage of his weak points just as easily as the Organization might.
