Yugioh Legacy!verse
Chapter Summary: Yugi's the one to explain the whole 'possession' thing.
Word Count: 860
Rating: teen
Of course, the guys make Yugi be the one to explain everything. Well—like that’s a surprise. Kaiba still is angry at the world for making him believe in any of it, or maybe just at Yugi for being a self-sacrificing idiot, and Joey’s too afraid of her wrath to say anything. Yugi nearly falls asleep on her shoulder for a bit before sitting up like he’s just had a full night’s sleep. He stumbles through the explanation a little, mostly because he’s worried about how she’ll react.
She’s definitely not happy. She’s not sure whether she should be angry at them for not telling her earlier or just feel disturbed.
She’s too tired to do much more than frown at the table, though.
“T-Téa. Are you okay?” Yugi’s definitely worried, so she has to pat his shoulder.
“So. I’ve been possessed, multiple times, and no one bothered to tell me.”
“To be fair, how do you even go about saying something like that?” Yugi asks, looking a little miserable. “It’s not like we were keeping secrets from you. It’s just…so much was going on…mostly Marik, but still….”
“I’m not…mad. Maybe a little disappointed, but…” she begins, and Yugi looks like she’d just kicked him. She sighs, then changes the topic. There’s no fixing that, so maybe she shouldn’t even try. “So, do we know anything about the ghost or whatever this is that has a taste for lace?”
“I could feel something, but it’s not clear,” Dark Magician offers quietly. “I haven’t been paying too much attention, since keeping all of you safe is the most important task.”
“I’m glad. Though I’m…” Yugi sighs, biting his lip, then asks frankly, “Umm, not to be rude or anything, but shouldn’t you be in the afterlife? With Atem?”
Dark Magician laughs. It’s an odd sight. “Oh, part of me is. Just as part of you is in the Duat, Pharaoh.”
Kaiba blinks then sighs. “It is too late for this nonsense. Just tell me, will I need to go to the roof with my dragon?”
Dark Magician shakes his head. “Unless you don’t trust me or the others I can call on, Master Seto, that will not be necessary. I plan on bringing others in so that we can ensure the safety of all here. No one’s expendable.”
“I can think of a few for whom that doesn’t apply,” Kaiba mutters. As Joey opens his mouth in outrage, he continues, “I wasn’t talking about you, brat. Don’t always assume I’m talking about you.”
Joey’s caught by surprise. He doesn’t know how to react, and ends up silent instead.
“We should sleep. Tomorrow,” Kaiba continues with a nasty smile, “…we’ll be stronger, and we’ll hunt down whatever thought it was a good idea to mess with actual Duelists and make them pay.”
Yugi’s about to disagree, but then the image of Téa falling crosses his mind, and a burning anger awakens in his heart.
Before Yami, he would never have thought of something so dark as revenge. And, true, even despite the fact that they’d targeted his precious Téa, he should have just enough strength to keep a level head. Someone has to, after all, and that was a great part of the Pharaoh’s strength. Yami had thought he was the weak one, the one to whom all dark thoughts occurred, and that it was only thanks to Yugi’s strength that he wasn’t evil, but that was hardly the case. They were reflections of one another, that’s all. Born with different ingredient proportions but the same general recipe.
He finishes his hot chocolate. He’s tired and getting silly. And he doesn’t want to let go. But then…does he really want his girlfriend to be woken by his nightmares in the night like a little kid?
“We’ll take the couch, though we’ll probably need blankets,” Téa states firmly squeezing his hand, and…
Of course. His childhood friend, protector. Which is sweet and embarrassing and he buries his face in her arm again. There’s a problem, though. Suddenly he doesn’t want to move.
“Guess I’ll just have Téa’s cocoa den, if you don’ want it. And den I’ll join you guys, if you don’t mind.” Téa’s about to protest, but Joey sighs and shrugs. “Eh, de carpet ain’t bad. I nearly fell asleep on it earlier, and I’ve certainly slept on worse. Remember Duelist Kingdom? That was anything but a walk in de park.”
She nods, and Yugi murmurs something that sounds like an affirmation into the thin fabric of the dress. He’s cute when he’s this sleepy, but there are more important things to worry about.
Unfortunately.
The thought occurs to her that Yugi might panic, thinking that he'll always have this kind of bad luck, and try something stupid like breaking up with her to keep her safe, but she'll shrug that off and shake some sense into him if she has to. Even if nothing changes, it's interesting, and she trusts him and their friends and there's no way they can't make it through everything life can possibly throw at them. Between her and Joey, probably, they can keep Yugi calm.
