If you want a better treatment of some of the concepts in this chapter, go read MyAibou's stories (fanfiction.net).  It's mostly mentioned quickly because while it's important to this universe, I really wanna get to the tournament, and don't want to just rewrite her work.  Because it's amazing and I'd fail and I don't wanna be disrespectful like that.

Joey joins them at the café table and notices them holding hands.  He pumps his fist in the air.  “It’s about time!”
“Joey, that’s rude.  That’s not how you respond.  You say ‘congratulations,’ which is what I’m doing right now.”  Tristan joins them, grinning.  It’s as if nothing has changed.
“What, it did take foreva.”  Joey’s sulking.
“Well, speaking of which, have you called Mai yet?”  Yugi asks, smiling slightly.
“Mai?  Why would I call Mai?”  Joey looks clueless, which earns her another glare from Téa.  “I-I mean.  I don’t know her phone number and you don’t eitha, and…and you knew that the whole time, ya jerk!”
“He’s right, kiddo.  You should call more often.  A girl starts to think she’s not wanted,” a voice joins them, and Joey freaks out so much he falls out of his chair.
              “M-Mai!”
How she’s known where to show up, Yugi has no clue, but it’s not like that’s all that unusual.  She has a habit of showing up in places exactly when and where she needs to be.  He can’t help but laugh at the flustered expression on Joey’s face as his friend gingerly picks himself up.
“Seriously, though, Yugi, Téa, congratulations.  I’m counting on you two to be the sickeningly sweet couple you only see on TV.  I get tired of reality consisting of grabby old men.  I need to believe in humanity again.”
Téa nods.  “Actually, that’s why I made my move.”
Joey’s face instantly darkens.  “Do I need ta be a bodyguard for either of ya?”
“Men,” Gardner states with as much annoyance as Yugi can muster for his Grandpa.
Mai nods.  “I’m looking forward to a duel with you, Yugi.  Our rematch keeps being put off, and it’s a little annoying.”
Muto ignores Joey grandstanding in the background and looks directly at Mai.  That expression…that’s utterly Yami.  “I’m looking forward to it myself, though I’m worried I’m a little rusty.  I haven’t seriously competed since…the world championships?”
Mai snorts and steals a chair from a nearby table.  “You getting rusty at a game.  That’s a joke.”
“Well, we’ll see soon enough.”  Yugi smiles, but his eyes are still serious.  “Do you know anything about the tournament?”
Mai’s eyes narrow.  “Like, who’s hosting it?  You’re worried something’s going to happen.”
Tristan points out, “Well, we don’t have a very good track record.  No offense.”
Yugi fights the urge to bury his head in a hand again.  “None taken, considering I was thinking it anyway.”
“Well, you have a point.”  Valentine nods.  “If you need any help at all, don’t hesitate to ask.  I’m sick of just standing on the sidelines.”
Joey’s expressions and gestures become stranger than normal.
“What my idiot of a friend is trying to say,” Tristan explains, pushing Joey’s head down rather forcefully, “Is that we’re glad to have you, and he’s worried about your safety because he actually cares and is too much of a dunce to say it.”  His voice changes from playful to hard.  “Also, to join the club, you have to swear your days with the evil side are over.”
That earns a glare, and even Yugi protests, “I played the Orichalcos, too, you can’t blame—”
Mai looks surprised, even a little confused, but she shakes her head firmly, ignoring the contribution.  “I’m not going to make that mistake again, and if there’s anything I’ve learned from all of you, it’s that friendship can protect you from things like being an idiot.  So if you’re willing to have me in your little squad, I can promise that I will do everything I can to make sure I never go astray like that again.”  She holds out her hand, and Yugi releases his hand to hold out his as well, serious with just the slightest smile in his eyes.  They shake hands, and Tristan nods.
              “Good enough.”
Joey scoots his chair closer to Mai’s, and the others start to talk about what they’ve been up to since the last time she saw them.  Téa glances over, and Yugi’s beaming, surrounded by his friends again.  It’s a touching sight, but instead she feels dread crawl over her mind.  Yugi glances at her sharply, but when all she can do is helplessly shrug, he relaxes again, reaching out to take her hand once more.
