Unfortunately, it turns out that the semi-eidetic memory has a flaw: to remember something, he has to actually pay attention to it first.  Maybe it’s a survival mechanism to avoid drowning in the data but it’s hard to remember to be grateful as he’s, once again, staring at a blank history test just ‘cause the class bores him.  There aren’t even HYDRA or SHIELD historical details to perk his interest.

The Almost Man

Another fun thing from watching the Captain America credits: Peter Stark was a Hydra Lieutenant.  Like, Howard should totally reexamine his life choices, but Peter???  Peter definitely needs help.  /grins
Also, Riley's a decent guy, generally, but that ending was a dick move, and Xander was an ass, so.  Fixing that.  (He'll mess up later, in other ways, but ways that make more sense and aren't just punish Buffy for anything she does.  For one thing, related to this he's gonna forget this about Willow with the whole Alicia thing and she still has to yell at him.)
Plus there is absolutely nothing wrong with being single.  'Course, in canon, part of it is that Xander doesn't see the unhealthy relationship bit of it and is just like "this guy is the best relationship you've ever had" but still.  Meh.

I only learned about Cinemark's Marvel XD today but I got to see Iron Man again so it's a fair trade.
Things I didn't notice the first time (from the credits):
One of Downey's assistants was named Christine.
Tony's Catering provided some food for the crew.
I was amused.

Xander doesn’t hear the steps entering his warehouse with his physical ears over the earmuffs and his pounding at the anvil.  It’s the mental tap on his shoulder, courtesy of a new sentry alarm spell he and White Star worked out, that gets his attention, and he carefully places the hammer aside and wipes the sweat off his forehead, tugging the earmuffs down around his shoulders.
He turns to see Giles crossing the floor carefully, freezing in shock.  “I didn’t—sorry—”
Xander takes pity on him, crossing the floor and meeting him halfway.  “I’m cool.  You’re not a mad scientist.  I’m not gonna lose my mind now.”
“I know no one else asked about this, but—if you need to talk about anything that happened, I’m sure your time spent in the Initiative could not have been a cake walk, as you’ve been trying to get the others to believe.”  It’s…impressive, honestly.  Sometimes Giles backs away, doesn’t try to be the father figure because honestly, as a Watcher he hadn’t really signed up for it, doesn’t know what to do.  Now, he’s actually noticing, actually trying, and that—what else can Xander ask for?
“I’m—I might.  Maybe.  Don’t feel about talking about it now, though, so don’t hold your breath.”  He glances at the papers in Giles’ hands and frowns.  “If that’s homework I’ve missed, you can head right back to your apartment, though.”
“No—” and yeah, that was a mistake, reminding Giles he doesn’t have his other job anymore.  “It’s—I want help looking through the files the Initiative had.”
Xander’s mind goes cold, but he steels himself into dealing.  “Do you have digital data as well?  Star could lend a digital hand.”
“I still have the disks.”  Giles holds them up, still hesitant.  “It’s not…too much, is it?”
Xander grins, shoving back all the trauma for the others to deal with.  “Hey, I tend to obsessively categorize anything that scares me.  Makes me feel more in control.  That’ll help me, and I can help, too, which always makes me feel better, so count me in.”

Five (Dead Men) Down

Note to reader: this is actually partially based on real life.  My friends in Uni made me watch Buffy in the first place so you have them to thank for all this lovely fic, but also I assume they were looking out for me.  We're fairly certain that the place is situated on a Hellmouth (possibly in the abandoned and haunted high school we bought years ago and still haven't done anything with that sits on the property), which means that the watching was actually partially survival training.  We're also all entirely uncertain as to why everything in the town closed when it did, which prompted this fic.
It's maybe a bit of a nostalgia trip, but that's entirely understandable given that I attended a wedding of theirs today.  I arrived just when they started.  Talk about timing!
It's also partially prompted by The Sunnydale Press on Tumblr that got me thinking about exactly how weird it would be to live on a Hellmouth, and how much that's just normal for these people so that's all they know.  Sorry about the notes longer than fic, but enjoy!

“What’s one of the weirdest parts about living on a Hellmouth?” Kris asks out of the blue, and it says something that Xander doesn’t even act like her suddenly popping into his office and starting a conversation midway was out of the ordinary.  ‘Course, given the content of the question, maybe it wasn’t that odd?
“I mean, I’m sure part of it is being a rural Hellmouth, since I don’t hear about this in Cleveland, but…it took me forever and I still don’t always remember that stores aren’t closed by 3 o’clock.  I mean, dance clubs like the Bronze, sure, but things like grocery and hobby stores?”  He shakes his head.  “Thinking about it I’m pretty sure it’s because people wanted to get home well before dark to avoid being eaten, but growing up it just seemed normal ‘cause I didn’t have any frame of reference.”
She thinks about that for a second then nods before turning around and striding back to her office.
“That better not be a crossword answer!” he bellows after her.

“Wolves don’t fly, you idiot,” the thug hisses as the white and teal hulking suit descends.
“Well, maybe you just don’t have enough imagination, because I can guarantee you there are a lot of things you don’t think about which is why you’re so cliché—” she responds, and is interrupted by a gauntleted fist punching the man in the jaw and knocking him out.
“I get that you’re enjoying yourself but we’re not here to chat with the minions,” Paladin tells her, voice modulated, and despite that she thinks she can hear the amusement in his voice.
“Hey, your least favorite Slayer cleared me.”  It’s probably not the best way to say it, but given that he doesn’t flinch, she hasn’t messed up.  “Besides, isn’t quipping an essential part of the fight?”
Armored shoulders shrug, but he doesn’t glance in her direction—probably keeping an eye on her through the monitors in the suit.  “You’re talking to Mr. Stealth, you know.  I mean, there have been Paladin sightings, now, so I can slightly step out of the shadows, but you’re talking to the guy who didn’t step outside until I knew my stealth functions were functional.”
She pouts.  “Aww, you’re no fun, bo—I mean, Paladin.”  She doesn’t have to see him roll his eyes.  That’s what her secretary senses are for.  “I’ve heard a few of the stories of your strictly Exoskel days.”
“That’s a little less in yo’ face than a full armor suit.  Easier for people to ignore evidence,” he responds.  They walk in silence for a little ways before he breaks it again.  Probably not on board with the whole ‘stealth first’ thing he’s trying to show her, but whatever.  She’s not buying the whole ‘not a showoff’ thing.  He’s not all the time, but he definitely can’t argue he isn’t ever.  “You know, this smells nostalgic.”
Inside the suit, she wrinkles her nose.  “You’re kidding me.”
“You have no idea how much time I spent in sewers as a kid.  Sunnydale was a weird town,” he replies slightly wistfully.  “Of course, I’m blocking most of it with the filters.  I’m not an idiot.  And I kinda favor disposing of these suits in an incendiary way after this mission.  It’s a little wasteful but it’s not like I can’t afford it.”
“Nah, we clean ‘em and use ‘em for only the dirtiest jobs.”  She pauses, then, because she’s noticed he enjoys puns, adds,  “Done at a reasonable price?”
As expected, he snorts, undignified, and nods in agreement.

He’s also far more chipper than any human should ever be at night.  Which probably has something to do with the disposable cup in his hand.
“Well, there’s a reason such a crazy crew is working together,” Harper points out, and Nakol shrugs.  The human isn’t wrong.
“Are you sure you want to pack that?” Ajhr asks, raising her sculpted eyebrow at a crate.  She must be using her x-ray vision.

AN: If I remember correctly, this was written on July 4th, but I wanted to post something more hopeful, so this got saved back instead.

“Hey, Pepper,” Tony says, and she’s hovering on the edge of drunk but surprisingly has yet to go search out a warm body for the night.  “You think your beard will be salt and pepper?”
She sniggers to herself, but there’s something quiet and lost about her at the moment, and after only a few months in her employ it’s vastly disconcerting, because he’s never seen her with all of her masks removed.
“Excuse me?”  He raises an eyebrow, plays along.  It’s what he’s paid to do—up to a point, anyway.  Also, he’s used to Tony starting conversations midsentence and expecting everyone else to be on the exact same page.  He’d thought it’d been a trick to test his patience like a number of her other habits, but instead found that she does the same with everyone, from reporters to senators.  She usually doesn’t realize she’s left anyone she’s addressing far behind conversationally.
“When you’re older and I’m dead,” she states bluntly, and he blanches, barely preventing the glass in his hands—picked up more for a need to fit in than a desire for alcohol—from falling and breaking all over the expensive carpet, drink and all.
“Are you all right, ma’am?”  She hates the ma’am.  Well, sort of.  From anyone else, it earns a glare, but from him she’ll joke about ancient movies and gentlemen but she won’t throw a fit, which is usually synonymous with permission.  (He’ll do things without permission anyway.  Like force her to attend meetings with a hangover.  He will spare some of his ancient Aunt’s remedy then, which while it makes her face twist into the most amusing expressions also makes her not feel like she wants to strangle somebody, which is generally bad for business.)
“Oh, now, probably.  My liver, maybe not, but I’ve got years yet for that.”  She takes another sip from the flute, staring pensive and subdued over the town.  “I just…you know how I am.  What I do.  I can’t hope to keep it up forever.  Someday,” she states solemnly, nodding in the direction of a few fireworks that appear to be dazzling appreciative guests, “I’ll be one of those.  Brilliantly engineered, exploding to the awe and wonder of the nation watching, and my legacy will only last long enough for the afterimage to fade on the inside of the watchers’ eyelids.”  She takes another sip, hands shocking, and it’s at this point that he realizes, My God, Tony Stark actually is human.  He has sudden, breathtaking compassion for his boss that he didn’t have just a day before.
“You say that,” he responds dryly, trying to ignore the pain the thought of her lying dead anywhere is suddenly causing, “…but if you in your lab is any indication, you’re like the phoenix.  How you keep surviving all those explosions you cause is nothing short of a miracle.”
There’s a breathless few moments before she’s beaming and has attached herself to him, like a limpet.
He begins to walk as she sways by his side.  “Come on, Tony, let’s get you to bed.”
“Is that an innuendo?” she asks, the yawn spoiling the leer.
He shakes his head, doesn’t bother replying, summons her personal doctor to make sure she doesn’t have alcohol poisoning, and grabs one of his novels for fun as he settles beside her bed.  “Too bad,” is the last thing he hears, soft and lonely, and he pretends for the longest time that he never heard her say that.  It’s just easier that way.
