Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Iron Man Crossover (Self-Made Hero)
Summary: Faith knows why Xander has issues dealing with her even if no one else does.
Word Count: 336
Rating: Teen, placed under cut because it references one of the canon instances of BTVS non-con, Consequences.  I've only read people talk about it a few places (as opposed to Spike's attempt), but Xander's never gotten over it (he was always a lot quieter in S7 when Faith was in the room) and Faith...Faith really is working on being a hero, which is exactly why she can't let this go.  (There's a whole lot but there's one blog that goes through everything, and there's an entry for every episode with consent issues-this is the one for Consequences.  I'm not sure I'd recommend it, given its subject matter, but it is well written and points out everyone and wow Buffy is a lot more problematic as a show than you realize on first viewing.)

a mission goes badly... )

madimpossibledreamer: Eye from manga drawing. (ace attorney)
It is one of the great fails of the last season of Buffy that we never got to see the First torturing anyone else.  Because, let's be honest.  This is the Buffy crew.  They've had so many people die around them.  I would've liked to see more of that, which maybe makes me cruel, except for the fact that I like...
It's not just to watch them suffer.  Or be angsty or hurt each other.  They do enough on their own.
It would've felt more like a final season to look back on everything that came before and reflect on the deaths and friendships and whatnot.  I mean, people rarely remember Jesse's name (this is people who have watched the show multiple times and I've seen a vast majority of the episodes once.  Crazy, right?) but he was Xander's friend and Willow's friend and he died and Xander killed him.  Or the demon wearing his face.  That's such a pivotal moment and of course Willow and Xander would shrug it off like it was nothing because they're the king and queen of compartmentalization but it was not nothing.  It would continue to haunt them, particularly out of the blue, because that's how guilt works.
Also, it would've made the First that much more dangerous.  We don't see the First do that much.  It's mostly the ancient vampires that are really, really hard to kill, and controlled Spike, and it's so easy to focus on the physical threats because they were shown more.  But this is the First.  The embodiment (ha!  given that it's not actually corporeal...no?) of the concept of all Evil with a capital E.  It would twist the knife.  It would remind them of all the people they failed to save.  It would take on the faces of all the people they loved and lost and taunt them.  You know when Spike's working for Adam and he knows exactly what to say to get them all not only doubting each other but doubting themselves?  The exact words to punch a hole in someone's gut?
The interesting thing about this is that there's a similarity.  Spike might've been "de-fanged" (i.e. not a physical threat) but he knew exactly what to say to break them.  The First should've been like that.  Except so much more so.
Finally, I didn't go into complete detail here.  I showed the first times that Jesse and Cordy showed up, but they were back.  Along with many others.  Partly that's because the imagination tends to be worse than a certainty.  I'm betting my reader's minds can conjure up worse than anything I can write.  (At least, I've found that's true when I'm on the reader's side.)  Also partly because it triggered a panic attack.  (Which I've experienced, if not, luckily, too recently, so I'm writing from my own experience there.)  (It being the First, its words probably magically burn onto the synapses, though.  Or maybe it'll whisper again in his nightmares...)
Wow, did not intend for that to get long.

I do actually kind of ship it, but Xander!muse's insisting that they don't actually work out.  (They do attempt, though--that offhanded reference to Xander having taken Andrew out on a date was more than just rumor.  In the end, though, he is a man cursed [and occasionally blessed] with an eidetic memory.  With several geniuses with eidetic memory.  As much as he tries to let go of the past, the past won't let go of him.)  Other universes (like the fractured pharaoh one), sure.  Not in this lifetime.

“I don’t blame you for Anya.”
Andrew screams.  He glances back to find Xander standing there, with only his helmet removed.  He’d flown in.
Wow.  He really is Paladin.  It’s one thing to know it intellectually, maybe see him in the suit once or twice, but it’s entirely different to be joined by him on the tenth floor of their temporary HQ.  And, of course, he’d still been dealing with Warren’s ghost and being a supervillain (how dumb is that?) and…
         Well.
“Has anyone told you the eyepatch is sexy?” he blurts, because he’s pretty sure the answer is no, and, well.  Seeing Xander hurting with everyone’s reactions was slowly breaking his heart.
He can see Xander’s brain stutter.  “Uhhh.  No.  Thanks, though.”
“I’m really so—” he tries to say, but a gloved hand waves in his direction.
“Like I said.  Don’t blame you.  I’d have to be mad at her for being a hero in the end, and I think that would break me, so you’re off the hook.”  He swaggers over to where Andrew is standing and leans against the railing.  Andrew thinks about saying something, worrying about it, but then realizes that this is a guy who can fly so even if he falls it’s not a big deal.  It’s a little uncomfortable, but not in a way that he isn’t enjoying.
“We were all worried,” he confesses softly, unaware that he’s even going to say those words until they’re out of his mouth, and Knight chuckles slightly.
“Well, I’m okay.  Just had a few things to get together.  Visit an old friend.”  He pauses.  “I don’t think I ever told you, that thing with the leech?  Inspired.  Also terrifying.”
“How’d you get out of that one?” Andrew asks, curious.
“Lucky for me, I knew there was a vampire nest nearby.  Just yelled enough until they came and accidentally got it on themselves instead of me when they were trying to crack my shell crab-style.  Barely had enough to fly home.”  He smiles.  “Thanks for the flirting, by the way.  I’m not in the mood now and I wasn’t then, but it still helped me feel better.”
Andrew grins.  That means he might—maybe—have a chance, though he might not deserve it.  Still, that also means Knight might not mind having him around, which means—“That offer of a job still open?”
“Always recruiting,” Xander grins, slings an arm around Andrew’s shoulders, and together they walk toward the stairs.

         Alexander Jessie Knight is dying.
At any other time, the media would be having a field day.  Because Knight is news.  Because he just quietly burst onto the scene, to the point he makes Athena jokes.  And once he was there, well.
The world apparently can’t get enough.  They just love the schizophrenic nature he has behind the camera, the fact that sometimes you might get Xander, joking and flirty but quiet and respectful and humble, and sometimes you might get Tony (not that the world understands that) who loves the camera and shows off and does all the stunts that people read tabloids for.  Everyone always wants the newest Knight tech.  The stock shares only continue to grow in value.  He wins so many awards, is the focus of so many articles.  Knight Innovations was declared one of the best places to work worldwide in all years since its creation.  He and Kris were declared one of greatest Power Couples of the Age.
Admittedly, it’s probably an unhealthy obsession for Andrew to be reading every single thing and have his picture of Xander shirtless on his wall but he’s pretty sure Xander knows and hasn’t yelled at him yet, so he figures that’s permission.
Point is, usually, the world would care.  Especially since happens to be at the same time that Miss Chase has died.
But the thing is, Miss Chase has died.  Everyone’s dying.  It’s the end of the world, and Andrew knows enough magic to know that they don’t have much chance.
But he’s selfish, and he’s pretty certain he loves Xander, and if anyone can engineer their way out of this situation, it’s Xander, so he’s putting all his hopes with Xander.
They’d been working on nanotech.  It’s not completed yet.  May have side effects or even kill Xander.  But given the choices, it’s a chance of death, which is better than the certainty of death.
It had happened months ago.  Xander had gotten wounded by a demon lord.  It hadn’t mattered, not right away.  It became obvious about a week ago that there was poison or a curse or something slowly eating away at Xander’s brain.  At least, it had been slow, but something seemed to trigger it.  The first clue was his boss collapsing in the middle of the building, hands to his head, but Knight was prone to migraines, so it hadn’t been as worrying as it should’ve been.  Since then, his condition had deteriorated significantly, to the point he was now in a coma.
“Sorry about this,” he says, and then injects the nanites into Xander’s blood, and given the sudden screaming and twisting it hurts, but Andrew can’t bring himself to feel guilty.
And then the proximity alarms go off.
“Star?” he asks cautiously, having never given the same protocols as, for example, Kris.
Instantly the AI answers, worried.  “Yes, Mr. Wells.”
“You should probably suit him up.  I’ll go deal with the visitors.”
He’s sure she notices his voice shake.  She’s an AI with the ability to analyze every single tremor.  She doesn’t call him on it.  “I’ll get Ranger One ready for a house party.”
When the world explodes like a supernova and then collapses down into the dark, Xander’s still unconscious.  He only wakes later, with Willow kneeling above him.  “This isn’t your world,” she explains before he can even say anything, and he just smiles vacantly at her and yawns.
         “Uhm.  Okay.”
“Welcome back,” Oz says quietly, and he nods back, super happy.  He really hadn’t been kidding about stealing the werewolf, minus the fact that he’d at the very least respect relationships and wouldn’t have dared.
“The multiverse is in danger,” Giles says somewhat distantly as he walks into the room.  “I’m gathering a team to help save it.”
And that’s just begging for a specific response.  Unfortunately, he has no cigars handy, but he can at least say the requisite line.  “I love it when a plan comes together.”
That gets a mad grin from Willow and amused eyes from Oz, and it’s almost enough to distract him from the fact that he’s hearing Star’s explanation of his world ending without him in his head.

“Hey, you’re my age!”  The next one is a teen, pumping his hand enthusiastically.  It’s interesting that they’ve actually sort-of-physically appeared.  It probably means that it’s actually working and they’re stitching themselves together and becoming more substantial and stuff.
“Careful, I’m still a little fragile,” Xander jokes, and instantly Tony’s sitting them down, looking worried.  And, hey, it’s already working, because he feels less like he’s dying and more like it’s your average ‘I wanna die’ migraine, and he’s already absorbing stuff.  Like, the second he says ‘fragile’, that translates to ‘brittle’, and suddenly his mind is adjusting to all the ways to strengthen brittle materials like metals and plastics.  It hurts and it’s a lot of information but he’s actually slowly processing it now.
“This is kind of fascinating,” Tony admits.  “So…there’s a version of me with magic.  And he’s stabilizing this so we don’t go boom.”
Xander shrugs.  Carefully, so as not to upset the headache and make it seek revenge again.  (Like Maggia.  Like Mandarin.  Like Obi—Stane, I mean.)  “That, or I’m insane, ish, and you’re all figments of my imagination and I’m the one actually doing the magic and talking to myself.”
Tony looks hurt, but then he doesn’t care for the thought, either.
He smiles.  It looks like one of Tony’s smiles.  “For the sake of sanity, I’m going with ‘you are all real’.  Makes me feel less pathetic.  I don’t need to be the idiot kid with the imaginary friends.  Or the schizo.  Take your pick.”
“You’d be a genius kid, but yeah.  Because Mrs. Rhodes would yell at me about manners, let’s assume we both exist.”  Tony’s patting his arm, and grins back at the hesitant smile he gets at his words.

Xander’s chipper when he appears, coffee in hand, for the research summons.  The only time this is ever true is when he’s been up all night and isn’t even aware he probably should’ve slept, so Willow’s a little concerned.  “I’ve been thinking,” he begins.
“Uh-oh,” Giles responds, sarcasm evident in both syllables, and Xander grins, unhurt.
“Har bloody har,” is his response, only the ghost of the accent is actually kind of accurate, and that’s weird and new.  “Anyway,” he continues, now that Giles is quiet in what is probably shock, “…the whole idea with the scanning wasn’t a bad one.  We just needed to be a little more careful.  Star and I have determined that her reading things silently is like a human reading things silently because she hasn’t been able to cast any chanty spells like that, so if we have her read and store information, it won’t lead to any Moloch-shaped situations.  Of course, we’ll use one of her forks, just so the original isn’t in any danger, but I was thinking,” he turns to Willow, “…we could maybe create a database.  Include an intent option for access, so, say, if you have a close encounter of the ghostly kind, you can access the information about ghosts.  Stuff pertinent to your unique unfortunate situation.  If you don’t—say, if you’re, say, the government trolling for data—it’s like the database doesn’t even exist.  We’d need to use a blend of magic and tech to pull it off, which, happy days, is just what I specialize in.  Whaddya say, Wils?  Sound like a good time?”
“We could save more lives, and it’s an interesting project…” she answers cautiously, able to follow the nonstop talking.  “But let’s shelve it for now, okay?  More immediate life-saving right now.”
He blinks like he’s completely forgotten why they’re even there, and then looks around.  “Oh.  Right.  Yeah, okay.”  He sits down and begins gulping down the coffee.

“But…I don’t really want to delete it,” she mutters.  She really likes the job, but…
“Delete it?  Whoever said anything about deleting it?  That, my dear Miss Chase, would be a travesty.  I’m wondering why you thought it was acceptable to conceal this.  This is fun.”  He’s beaming, but she can tell he’s been up longer than he should since he looks slightly manic.
“O-okay…” she responds, not sure what else to say.
Unfortunately, he’s picked now to stop being oblivious.  “You’re freaking out,” he observes, frowning and leaning in slightly.  “Why are you freaking out?”  And then he just doesn’t move.
She tries to figure out how to say it, but then his gaze unexpectedly softens.  “Are you worried about not having enough time for it?  Because I can definitely—”
She sighs.  “I’m great.  Weekends and after I get done are just fine.  It’s a hobby, not my source of income.  I did leave a lot of my collection in the States, but—” she quickly raises a hand to forestall any of the offers for him to ship it or re-buy it, because her boss is weird and generous and she knows he would, “—but that’s just fine.  With what you pay me even with a London apartment—”
“Flat,” he interrupts helpfully and smiles innocently when she glares.  She’s not sure what’s up with him right now but she’d been doing work and after the initial shock she’s starting to get annoyed.
“Even with a London apartment, I can still afford what I need and what I want.  So usually, this job is worth it.”  She narrows her eyes even further.  “Usually.”
He grins.  Usually it’s also nice to see him smile, because he’s friendly and a nice boss, but she doesn’t particularly care for this one, because it’s the kind of smile that’s matching the rest of his annoying mood.  “Don’t worry,” he pats her shoulder, “…I’ll add a bonus for today.”  And then he wanders off, leaving her annoyed and restless and wondering how she’s going to be able to concentrate on her work for the rest of the day

“You clearly don’t think much of the study of thought, Mr. Harris,” Walsh states with bite, and Buffy glances over at Xander, who’s been fidgeting.
She loves him, but really, for once could he please not make a scene?  She’s trying, for once, to not be labeled as the problem student, but a certain friend’s making that difficult, and it’s hard to tell whether Willow makes up for that.
Xander stands, looking unsure and hunched, a little.  “Actually, it’s pretty important,” he corrects gently, voice quiet.
Everyone’s just staring at him, including the teacher, so he begins the babble, trying to fill in the awkward silence.  “Well, nothing in this world gets done without your mind.  It’s your thought, your determination, that allows anything to be accomplished, so there’s that.  And…”  He pauses, but he’s getting onto a roll, and his voice is getting louder, and he’s starting to gesture, too.  “…And there’s quantum physics.  There are some really weird parts about our world that we don’t understand yet.  Take Schrödinger’s little thought experiment with the cat in the box.  Quantum theory states that observation is everything.  The example is putting a cat inside a box and closing the lid.  Unless it moves or makes a sound you don’t know whether it’s alive or dead in there.  The world exists in a series of mutually possible quantum possibilities.  Dead?  Alive?  Both, until you open the lid and find out for sure.  All the possibilities exist until you observe them, and then they solidify into one thing—what you see.  It’s not practically different from the normal world that we’re all used to, except that the very act of observing something makes it what it is.  Not that we’ve figured out how to make that act of observation work in our favor, or we’d all have a lot better grades than we do now with the same amount of work…”  That earns a few chuckles, “…But the very fact that my classmates are all staring at me thinking ‘what a loon, what is he talking about, what’s wrong with him’ makes the reality of me being here, standing in front of everything and babbling about obscure science stuff the reality we’re all living in, rather than some other possible world where I’m being quiet in my seat or not even attending college.  So, yeah, thinking and observing are important parts of life.”  He abruptly sits down, looking really embarrassed and sheepish.
“Well, who knew you had a brain in that head, Mr. Knight?” Walsh asks snappishly but with a little admiration, and there’s chuckles at that, too.  “I hope you continue to use it in my class, and maybe, just maybe, you might earn that A you’re trying to wish into existence.”  Willow reaches over and pats Xander’s hand.  He’s still looking a little in shock.

I actually geeked out about this in my physics class. One with an actually good teacher who'd do a demonstration and nerd out about it and do awesome/dumb things like try to propel himself across the room in a rolling chair using a fire extinguisher.  (I'm kind of bummed I wasn't there for that.  Reports say that it didn't really work, unfortunately.  You could probably get it to work with one of those big pressurized gas tanks but that's also super dangerous/flammable, so don't try that at home.  If necessary for your continued existence, do it with supervision and lab safety equipment.)
Also if you have not watched Babylon 5 and like story arc science fiction, do yourself a favor and watch it.  Fun fact: JMS originally pitched it to people who turned it down and then turned around and made Deep Space Nine.  Babylon 5 is a lot better because it's written by the guy who originally had the idea, and, you know, didn't steal it.
And, you know, you'll see all kinds of episodes.  Stick around long enough and there will be Space Rangers.  And.  Just do yourself a favor, watch it before I gush about it, okay?

Xander didn’t think there was any way that Babylon 5 could get better, but he notices, the next time he watches it, that the physics is right.  That the Starfuries actually work the way they would, moving around space, and that there’s no sound because there’s no atmosphere to carry it, and that the gravity in the station is generated in a way that actually makes realistic sense, and he nerds out and dissects a bunch of scenes and forgets to go to school entirely.
To be fair, he was still learning more Physics than they’d teach at Sunnydale High.

I got the image and it was hilarious.  I didn't expect it to get this dark.  (It's not bad, but, er, near death.  Again.)
(I'll probably explain this later, but I have yet to, so.)  Xander redesigned Star based on an Eclipse Phase concept, where humans were mostly just data and could make bodies as necessary.  Alpha forks are basically exact copies of the full consciousness.  Hard to make, and problematic, since--which is the real one again?  Beta forks are fairly useful but missing some unnecessary memory and skills.  Lower than that, down to gamma if I remember correctly, you get less and less of the original to the point it might not even be useful-slash-functioning yet.
