madimpossibledreamer: Paper lanterns floating over a fleet of ships. (lanterns)
Happy 4th!  Times may seem dark now, but remember that the United States is built on hope.  I hope you're with family with whom you feel safe, even if it's a chosen family, and you're having a blast and can carve out a little slice of sane and normal in these times.
This is a reference to real Cap, who is that hope.  (I ignore canon when it's dumb.  Such as with Nick Spencer, who apparently hasn't realized that stories are powerful and as a certain someone says, that means you've got a responsibility.  I'll avoid being vulgar and just say that I sincerely hope your actions will come around and bite you in the butt.)

Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Marvel Crossover AU (Self-Made Hero: The Infinity Mirror)
Summary: A little teaser for the Buffy we'll get in The Infinity Mirror.  She's the Buffy from the asylum, only she's not exactly crazy.  She remembers events that have happened to her in different dimensions and can't always keep track of what universe she's currently in or whose memories are which.
Word Count: 595
Rating: Gen

Buffy stops eating a pancake midway through, completely oblivious to the syrup escaping and dripping onto the table.  If she’d noticed Xander’s eyes follow every drop, she probably would have realized the sacrilege that it is, but she’s too busy following the thought.  “I remember something else,” she says slowly, trying to get used to the idea that someone would actually listen to anything she says and not just dismiss it as lies.  And with the way Xander leans forward, actively waiting on her word, now, she has that listener.  “In another dimension, I’m Lady Liberty, I guess.”
Xander quirks an eyebrow in an awfully familiar way that she actively recognizes from Tony, now that she thinks about it.  “Captain America,” she elaborates, because, oh yeah, that’s right, her male counterparts get a cooler name.  “They made me change my real name.”  She doesn’t remember what to; it’s horribly clichéd no matter what era it’s from.
That’s the frown Tony makes when he’s horribly offended and about to ruin someone’s day.  “That’s all very super sexist.  Bet they sanitized the movies.”
“I’m sure they sanitized everything, but…”  Now that she thinks about it, it’s natural for her to feel a kinship to a guy who wanted to help and was given powers but was thrown into a fight without too much preparation or support.  And then found himself way out of his depth, but kept trying anyway.  And then she processes the idea of Xander, of Tony, discussing something as being sexist while looking offended, and she snorts.  Very unladylike.
He steals a bit of her bacon while she’s not looking, which earns a death glare.  Still, stuff like that, it tends to be a distraction so she doesn’t look too close at something else, so…  “You definitely weren’t one of the worst Tonys.  But then, Howard was locked up for being a jerk a while ago and Jarvis practically raised you, so…”
He flashes one of the patented camera smiles at her and relaxes a little.  Then he winces.
“What?  Are you all right?” she asks.  He might think she’s oblivious to the migraines, but when he keeps having to take aspirin a lot, she notices.
“Just a memory flash.  Not a full personality,” he reassures her before looking thoughtful.  “I could make you your shield, you know.”
Now it’s her turn to frown.  “There’s no vibranium in this dimension, and I don’t think others would take too kindly to you entering their world just to obtain some.”
“Where we’re going, we don’t need vibranium,” Xander says in a good imitation of Doc Brown, and his smile turns smug and catlike when that startles a laugh out of her.  “See?  Made you laugh.”  And there’s Xander, Captain of Team Morale.  “I made the Exoskel.  Bet I could whip something up.”
“I’m not going to take that bet.  I’m not stupid.  I technically don’t have any money.”  And now that she’s opening her mind up to that, doesn’t this feel just familiar?
“Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered.”  Before she can open her mouth to complain, he holds up a placating hand.  “If nothing else, call it services rendered for saving the world.  I am of the extreme and just opinion that those fat idiots of the Council should’ve thought about hazard pay before they gave themselves an lazy man’s salary.”
If she thinks about the pay like being a soldier, it rankles less, so she shuts up as Xander goes on another wild story complete with gestures and just lets herself relax.  With pancakes.

Summary: Faith knows why Xander has issues dealing with her even if no one else does.
Word Count: 336
Rating: Teen, placed under cut because it references one of the canon instances of BTVS non-con, Consequences.  I've only read people talk about it a few places (as opposed to Spike's attempt), but Xander's never gotten over it (he was always a lot quieter in S7 when Faith was in the room) and Faith...Faith really is working on being a hero, which is exactly why she can't let this go.  (There's a whole lot but there's one blog that goes through everything, and there's an entry for every episode with consent issues-this is the one for Consequences.  I'm not sure I'd recommend it, given its subject matter, but it is well written and points out everyone and wow Buffy is a lot more problematic as a show than you realize on first viewing.)

a mission goes badly... )

madimpossibledreamer: Eye from manga drawing. (ace attorney)
It is one of the great fails of the last season of Buffy that we never got to see the First torturing anyone else.  Because, let's be honest.  This is the Buffy crew.  They've had so many people die around them.  I would've liked to see more of that, which maybe makes me cruel, except for the fact that I like...
It's not just to watch them suffer.  Or be angsty or hurt each other.  They do enough on their own.
It would've felt more like a final season to look back on everything that came before and reflect on the deaths and friendships and whatnot.  I mean, people rarely remember Jesse's name (this is people who have watched the show multiple times and I've seen a vast majority of the episodes once.  Crazy, right?) but he was Xander's friend and Willow's friend and he died and Xander killed him.  Or the demon wearing his face.  That's such a pivotal moment and of course Willow and Xander would shrug it off like it was nothing because they're the king and queen of compartmentalization but it was not nothing.  It would continue to haunt them, particularly out of the blue, because that's how guilt works.
Also, it would've made the First that much more dangerous.  We don't see the First do that much.  It's mostly the ancient vampires that are really, really hard to kill, and controlled Spike, and it's so easy to focus on the physical threats because they were shown more.  But this is the First.  The embodiment (ha!  given that it's not actually corporeal...no?) of the concept of all Evil with a capital E.  It would twist the knife.  It would remind them of all the people they failed to save.  It would take on the faces of all the people they loved and lost and taunt them.  You know when Spike's working for Adam and he knows exactly what to say to get them all not only doubting each other but doubting themselves?  The exact words to punch a hole in someone's gut?
The interesting thing about this is that there's a similarity.  Spike might've been "de-fanged" (i.e. not a physical threat) but he knew exactly what to say to break them.  The First should've been like that.  Except so much more so.
Finally, I didn't go into complete detail here.  I showed the first times that Jesse and Cordy showed up, but they were back.  Along with many others.  Partly that's because the imagination tends to be worse than a certainty.  I'm betting my reader's minds can conjure up worse than anything I can write.  (At least, I've found that's true when I'm on the reader's side.)  Also partly because it triggered a panic attack.  (Which I've experienced, if not, luckily, too recently, so I'm writing from my own experience there.)  (It being the First, its words probably magically burn onto the synapses, though.  Or maybe it'll whisper again in his nightmares...)
Wow, did not intend for that to get long.

I do actually kind of ship it, but Xander!muse's insisting that they don't actually work out.  (They do attempt, though--that offhanded reference to Xander having taken Andrew out on a date was more than just rumor.  In the end, though, he is a man cursed [and occasionally blessed] with an eidetic memory.  With several geniuses with eidetic memory.  As much as he tries to let go of the past, the past won't let go of him.)  Other universes (like the fractured pharaoh one), sure.  Not in this lifetime.

“I don’t blame you for Anya.”
Andrew screams.  He glances back to find Xander standing there, with only his helmet removed.  He’d flown in.
Wow.  He really is Paladin.  It’s one thing to know it intellectually, maybe see him in the suit once or twice, but it’s entirely different to be joined by him on the tenth floor of their temporary HQ.  And, of course, he’d still been dealing with Warren’s ghost and being a supervillain (how dumb is that?) and…
         Well.
“Has anyone told you the eyepatch is sexy?” he blurts, because he’s pretty sure the answer is no, and, well.  Seeing Xander hurting with everyone’s reactions was slowly breaking his heart.
He can see Xander’s brain stutter.  “Uhhh.  No.  Thanks, though.”
“I’m really so—” he tries to say, but a gloved hand waves in his direction.
“Like I said.  Don’t blame you.  I’d have to be mad at her for being a hero in the end, and I think that would break me, so you’re off the hook.”  He swaggers over to where Andrew is standing and leans against the railing.  Andrew thinks about saying something, worrying about it, but then realizes that this is a guy who can fly so even if he falls it’s not a big deal.  It’s a little uncomfortable, but not in a way that he isn’t enjoying.
“We were all worried,” he confesses softly, unaware that he’s even going to say those words until they’re out of his mouth, and Knight chuckles slightly.
“Well, I’m okay.  Just had a few things to get together.  Visit an old friend.”  He pauses.  “I don’t think I ever told you, that thing with the leech?  Inspired.  Also terrifying.”
“How’d you get out of that one?” Andrew asks, curious.
“Lucky for me, I knew there was a vampire nest nearby.  Just yelled enough until they came and accidentally got it on themselves instead of me when they were trying to crack my shell crab-style.  Barely had enough to fly home.”  He smiles.  “Thanks for the flirting, by the way.  I’m not in the mood now and I wasn’t then, but it still helped me feel better.”
Andrew grins.  That means he might—maybe—have a chance, though he might not deserve it.  Still, that also means Knight might not mind having him around, which means—“That offer of a job still open?”
“Always recruiting,” Xander grins, slings an arm around Andrew’s shoulders, and together they walk toward the stairs.

Part of the reason this fic was abandoned was the subject matter.  It was slated to be an Akihiko/Minato fic, but then I started to think about the weird potentially dubcon considering Minato's also Akihiko's Persona, and that...didn't quite feel right.  So I had trouble writing it or finishing it.  Which is why it is where it is and will probably stay that way.  That being said, there were definitely some parts/lines I liked, and despite it all I find Isabel interesting.  She might appear in something else, maybe, and if anyone wants to see Akihiko or Minato(Makoto) they are probably going to show up in future fic.  Or rather, future chapters of current fic...

Mere luck was all that saved Dean.
Usually, he wouldn't have woken up.  He subconsciously recognized all the 'safe' sounds-little Sammy's noises, the way his father moved around, even 'Uncle' Bobby.  So when he heard John's step, walking toward him, stopping, he would've usually stayed asleep,  knowing that Dad was just doing his job.
This time he woke, just in time to see the knife coming for his head.  Survival instincts reacted faster than his own brain, and in a second he was twisting out of the way.
"Thought you could trick me, boy."  A sneer, anger directed at him.
What had he done?  Panic thrilled through him, but somehow contained.  He wasn't going to die like this.  "Dad, what's going on?"
"Dad?" John Winchester repeated, look on his face only growing more disdainful.  "This ends now.  You're not my son.  You never have been."
"What?" he managed, eyes wet with pain and fear and a hint of anger, and that distant crash wasn't anything to worry himself about.  Just his world, falling apart.
"I don't know how you managed to convince us all, but you're not going to take Sam away from me."  Sam!
"Is Sammy okay?" he asked quickly, because if there was anything more powerful than his respect for this man who—was he right?  he'd always been right, after all, he was a hunter and knew what he was doing, but—but no, if he'd been affected out on a hunt, if he suddenly turned against Sammy too, he had to protect his younger brother, that was his job
"You won't see him again," John promised, holding up the knife again.
Dean had been training to make quick, life-or-death decisions all his life.  So while making the next choice was easy at the time—more instinct rather than anything else—he'd agonize over it later.  Later, though.
He jumped out the window, aiming for the bush he'd seen earlier.  The landing was a little scratchy, and he'd have cuts everywhere later, but for the time being he'd be able to make a run for it.  And make a run for it he did.
He ran hard, tearing through the streets, lungs feeling so much more alive than normal.  He made it to a payphone with no sign of Dad, and decided to risk the call to Bobby.  He probably used the wrong number, but at the other end was Bobby and that's what mattered.  His brain was a mess at the moment.
"Yeah?  This is Director Kirsch, how can I help you?"  Bobby sounded groggy.
"It's Dean."  His voice sounded harsh, and he couldn't help a cough.
"Balls, don't you know which lines to use, boy?" Yep, that was Bobby.
"Dad tried to kill me, and I don't know...if it's me, if something happened to me, or whether it's Dad—but Sammy, you gotta make sure Sammy's—"  And then he heard a familiar sound.  The Impala's engine.  He'd know his baby anywhere.  Except this time, it wasn't the sound of home.
He threw away the phone, began running down the streets, ignoring Bobby's frantic questions.  The Impala came tearing down the road, Dad at the wheel.  He barely managed to throw himself into a warehouse before he was run over, only to see a bunch of monsters with fangs and weird faces had made this place their home.  "Son of a bitch."
Something hit him over the back of the head, and he thought he noticed a flare of something bright before everything went dark.
